How can you use humor and satire to make your cause more engaging?

There is a Maya Angelou quote that says "people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel" and, in my experience, nothing makes a person feel better than when you can make them laugh. Finding a way to close out a conversation (especially difficult ones) with a quick joke, witticism or light hearted observation goes a long way towards building relationships that last.

Since our nonprofit provides trustee services for people with disabilities, we often have to talk about parents passing away, which of course is a sad and difficult topic. I find that gentle humor goes a long way to making this topic more approachable, and that approach has been well recieved by our potential clients.

Humour is a part of life that is so natural as breathing. Without humour is not possible to understand life as a concept. What humour means is the way of producing the emotion of developing the personality though a complex style of interaction with ourselves and the environment. What humour means is what we are in our essence, even if we are not so social we always take part in the expression of our private sense of humour. Humour doesn’t mean to laugh or to show our emotion with facial expressions. Sometimes is the way of how to create our speech in direct or indirect way of how to show our strength even to the ones who doesn’t respect our opinions. Humour as a satire, is the most powerful tool to express our intelligence.

In my experience, utilizing humor and satire as a large black man in community organizing is a nuanced endeavor. These tools, while powerful, can sometimes reinforce stereotypes or undermine my credibility due to preconceived notions tied to my race and size. It's imperative to approach these strategies with intentionality and authenticity, ensuring they serve to amplify the message rather than detract from the seriousness and validity of the cause.

Listen. The best way to engage. Have a personable conversation can get you farther with the customer. No one wants to try to talk to someone that gives robotic 1 or 2 word answers.

Recently saw one of the best example in the Colgate toothpaste campaign to encourage people to brush at night. A very small cause but the way they have presented it is amazing...they say that most nights end with sweets in India and may be other parts of the world as well.. rather it should end with brushing teeth..100 points from me.

When you live a life full of truth, then love will be apart of your story. We're created to experience each other at the best, worse, and in between. Each phase is beautiful. When we see the sadness in a situation or humor it gives us a chance to be in touch with any person in the World.

One of the most recognized brand strategies at México comes from Ghandi's library chain, which uses humor and sarcasm to encourage people to read. This strategy is a variation of another México's egg brand "Bachoco" which also uses different elements of comedy to draw people's atention. Both brands are quite recognizable by a larger audience due to the tone of their branding at the main cities in the country and shows that even something , that could give the impresion of being too "serious", as literature can employ humor to bring down that myth and encourage people to read more.

However, I'm also mindful that there are times when I might over-rely on it, using humor as a shield to avoid confronting deeper issues or emotions. Maintaining self-awareness and recognizing when humor transitions from being a helpful tool to becoming a hiding place is crucial. I aim to use humor effectively while addressing challenges head-on by staying attuned to this balance.
