A large investment in education about the ubiquity of rechargeable batteries is needed. Many people are unaware that their electric toothbrush, robot vacuum, ear buds, headphones, portable speakers, and many vapes, contain rechargeable batteries which can't be thrown in the trash.

4 Recycling process

Once the batteries are collected, they are transported to a recycling facility to recover materials and dispose of the waste. The recycling process may vary depending on the type of battery, but generally involves sorting the batteries by type, size, and condition. They may be tested for residual charge and discharged if needed. Next, the batteries are shredded into small pieces to expose the inner components and separate the metals from the plastics. The shredded pieces are then separated by physical or chemical methods, such as magnets, screens, filters, or leaching. The metals are further sorted by type and smelted in furnaces to melt them into liquid form and remove any impurities.
