Choose the right distribution style to balance the data across nodes by AUTO, EVEN, KEY, or ALL. With AUTO distribution, Amazon Redshift assigns an optimal distribution style based on the size of the table data. With EVEN distribution: The leader node distributes the rows across the slices in a round-robin fashion, regardless of the values in any particular column. If table doesn't participate in joins then with this option. With Key distribution The rows are distributed according to the values in one column. The leader node places matching values on the same node slice. ALL distribution ensures that every row is collocated for every join that the table participates in. Go with this option only for relatively slow moving tables.

Data distribution skew should be tracked and addressed since it can affect query performance. One or more nodes may get overloaded as a result of an uneven data distribution among the nodes.

KEY: Keys are identified prior to applying this distribution. This distribution works best when tables are joined, because if multiple tables are distributed based on Join Keys, then the Key values are physically stored together. 4. ALL: ALL distribution ensures that every row is collocated for every join that the table participates in.

Based on my experience in the healthcare industry using right Sort Key in AWS Redshift to optimize queries is an efficient way. Analyzing specific query patterns, filter conditions, and aggregation functions to determine the most appropriate sort key for your data is helpful. Ensuring to regularly monitor and fine-tune the sort key based on evolving query requirements and usage patterns helps to ensure ongoing query optimization. Eg, healthcare data involves timestamps, such as admission or discharge dates, test results, or medication administration times. If the queries frequently involve filtering or aggregating data based on specific time ranges, including the date or timestamp columns in the sort key, it can improve performance.

Redshift distributes data across multiple underlying physical nodes. Going across the network to fetch data from another node can take thousands of times longer than fetching the same data from local memory or disk. This means you need to structure your Distribution Keys to place data that will be processed by the biggest queries together, on the same nodes. This means picking some natural WHERE clause column like custmerID, year, region, ticker, or any other dimension that is always used to limit data to specific values, so it never interacts with different DK data. Reference and small tables should go to ALL nodes. This will allow each node to do calculations without going across the network, so will perform much better than EVEN.

The definition here is quite adequate. You have to remember your distribution style and sort index matters both during storage and retrieval. So while defining sort key, make sure you understand your high frequency use cases for a table for example which timestamp or date column you want to filter by, do you require latest or earliest data if so based on which column and put it as sort key.

Your primary and foreign key values are critical for data integrity and to plan for worst case scenario you would not like to have any encoding on these columns. For all other columns as a rule of thumb, feel free to apply ZSTD encoding as it works well for diverse datatypes including both numeric and varchar. Ideally you shouldn't spend much time thinking critically about each encoding principle because the gains and losses in terms of performance is minor if you switch between standards. Hence keep in mind what is stated above and save some time in writing redundant DDL scripts.

Identify the table and columns usage for each operation along with row volume and data size etc. 2) Workload Management (WLM): Configure WLM to prioritize critical queries and manage system resources effectively. 3) Regularly run the ANALYZE command to update statistics for the query planner, and VACUUM to reclaim space and resort rows.

Create and set up Workload Management queues to effectively distribute resources according to query types. This will help in the workload management.

In case if scheduled maintenance collides with the executing queries, result will be a terminated query and rolled back statements. This will add overhead and would require manual monitoring. Therefore, it's best to identify the maintenance window and schedule the queries accordingly. In addition, the general guidance is: 1. Use Truncate instead of Delete * 2. Use VACCUM after bulk data manipulation 3. Run ad-hoc Analyze after performing bulk data manipulation queries 4. User SORTKEY or DISTKEY based on the Data being loaded (eg. Timestamp) 5. Use COPY for large volume

Choose appropriate distribution keys for even data distribution and use compound or interleaved sort keys, regularly vacuuming tables. Employ efficient data types and compression to minimize storage.
