Using simulation tools can be a good way to learn more about vehicle dynamics but I also strongly believe in developing custom vehicle simulations from first principles. This way one can develop a better understanding of complex concepts which might be difficult to grasp by just reading or using an already existing simulation tool.

Using simulation tools like Adam’s, Carsim, Trucksim to evaluate the multi-body dynamics of the vehicle helps visualize its behaviour during different conditions/road profiles. You can also perform some dynamic conditions with transient analyses and run it in solvers like Nastran sol109,sol113 or Abaqus explicit to replicate physical scenarios. To incorporate creativity, you need to play with different parameters through DOE (design of experiments) method where you can use Taguchi, or Monte-Carlo or Latin Hypercube sampling. One perfect example would be: Linking modeFRONTIER to a multi-body dynamics software where you can run different iterations with multi objectives and see how vehicle behaves in different parameter combinations.

Though simulation is a good tool to improve understanding of Vehicle Dynamics subject but the main step , in my opinion , is to clarify the physics behind Vehicle Dynamics aspects and relate them to real industrial design . This is was and still the major tool, in my opinion, that enhances understanding and creativity in this field

My exposure here has been that the ride and handling direction was limited to a few professionals and a few decision-makers. Not that they were entirely wrong or not open to outside viewpoints even, it is just better to keep a diverse cross-section of professionals to consider vehicle dynamic directions. Vehicle dynamics is an ocean. It's the gateway to understanding mobility. So, to understand it, one has to begin with appreciating the natural physics behind motion, then heading towards building appreciation for driving as one in this forum suggested. Once that appreciation is built, simulation tools and physics models for dedicated areas of vehicle dynamics should be used. As a brake system engineer, I would prefer to be fed with knowledge regarding longitudinal motion and lateral motion and would want my SIM tools to be around that and the physical models to be around them.
