How can you encourage collaboration between departments for BI projects?

The objective of BI should support decision-making, it's important to ensure alignment with the overall business strategy and objectives. Clearly outlining the roles and responsibilities of each department and stakeholder is essential for avoiding confusion, conflicts, and scope creep. Each Department should be able to summarise the requirements and confirm.

During the Consumer Wallet model development for US banks, clarity in goals and scope was crucial. Each bank had distinct needs, so I initiated a cross-departmental meeting to define our primary objectives and metrics. This collaborative approach ensured the model met each bank's requirements while aligning with our broader business strategy. This upfront clarity streamlined our process, leading to a product that significantly enhanced our clients' decision-making.

In each BI project, We should develop the Goals and Scope as Stage 1. - These can vary from each domains. Lets Freeze our Domain as "Healthcare Domain" Goals: Streamlining the process for Patient Readmission rate at Different Facilities. Scope : Areas to workover for achieving our defined goals. Business team should spend solid amount of time in understanding the requirements from clients by detailing of FRD, BRD(Business Requirement documents). - This step clears the project understanding and give us signal to move forward. -However this is a repetitive cycle for frequent updating. Companies should also involve in deploying benchmarking standards from competitors. - Team involved in this must be a Cross Functional team DA & DE & DS

For a successful BI project, imperative pointers: - Define KPIs clearly. - Bring in the culture of referring to single source of data. - Maintain clean and validated data.

I would always start with understanding the overarching theme of the project and the department involved ( or would get benefited on this power bi implementation) This would help us to have a clear goal in front of us to work towards. *Followed by that a clear roles and responsibility from each team. *Followed by fortnightly connect on project status and back logs. *we can use projects management tools to be more interactive and lively throughout the project scope. *Last but not least giving creative owner ship to team who are working at ground level. This would encourage innovation and collaboration between the team.

Stakeholders do not bother about what tools you gonna use to solve the business problem statement. They should be given more priority on below factors. -- Flexibility on tool -- Easy Access to team -- Collaborative tool I would say for Visualization Power BI can be used. -- Which supports solve the purpose of business. NOTE: We should consider licensing factors as well based on large scale of this project.

It is a task with selecting the most appropriate BI tool for any organization should review both market research and product features and match the applications with their business requirements to find the best fit for their needs. 2. An enterprise’s size and growth also are important factors. 3. Use case is a crucial consideration. 4. A simple tool with fewer features might be easier to learn, and more cost-effective, when training beginner users. 5. Data Quality and processing time should be considered in mind as per the size of data with stakeholder side.

When running a BI project I have experienced that tooling quickly becomes a discussion. I would normally go with a tooling stack already available in the organisation. If the organisation has Microsoft office licenses then I would go with a combination of PowerBI and TEAMS, but most important is to ensure the end users gets proper introduction/training and they in the end feels comfortable. If an existing tool can be used it removed some resistance and uncertainty. In the past I have delivered BI projects based on various tooling, but I find the Microsoft PowerPlatfrom to very interesting and easy to get integrated with other data sources.

This is an important step in success of any project. Should develop an effective feedback mechanism from Stakeholders to the development team when we are building the dashboarding part. -- Channels can be like Mode of platform where they communicate. Key: Usually businesses miss out in adding lower level designation and only add top level designation. Loosing part in this game is Lower level designation are the one who knows the core areas, They should be communicated effectively. They should host Daily, Weekly, Monthly updates on the current status of the project throughout the stages. Note: Any changes in the project should be communicated to stakeholder.

Navigating the BI sphere, I've orchestrated communication as a bedrock for collaborative synergy. Transparent communication channel like MS teams to share with Project team what's going on each day with status call. Maintaining two-way communication between the development team and client to achieve effective results. Mostly on BI front will use Teams channel integrated with Power BI reports to share the report analysis we did and get the feedback from them instantly..

Whether it’s formal updates via email or quick interactions through instant messaging, structured communication enhances clarity, mutual understanding, and responsiveness, fostering a harmonious and productive working environment.

Multiple communication channels must be setup to ensure all the progress updates can be notified by all stakeholders. 1. Daily standup - 10-15 mins per day for quick update on operational level. 2. Weekly meeting - for all project members, to update the progress, hurdle, changes required, etc. 3. Biweekly management meeting. 4. Monthly top management meeting. These to ensure that the projrect is progressing on the right direction and to manage the expectation from stakeholders.

It is very important to involve the business users in every stage of BI project. -- If there is any confusion point during the development phase then straightaway business users need to be involved to understand the business context and hence clear the confusion. -- After every stage, Demo should be provided by the developers to the end users so that they are satisfied and eagerly wait for the final report. -- Engaging them closely will help them to understand the flow of project, tools and technologies used and trust the authenticity of the process. Ultimately they will consume the final report properly and get the clear business insights.

In every stage of project or development stage we should involve the client for having better visibility of our systems and make sure to document all the changes suggested by the customers. This is a proactive approach to avoid rework on our dashboards.

I think you have to go further than merely "involving end-users and customers." They have to own this and be a rigorous partner in terms of what's getting built and the business value it brings. This is not an IT project - we can't push solutions. This should be driven by the sales or operations or marketing leaders. If it's a "pull" by them in partnership with the technology teams, then everyone will be more successful.

You need to have the end users very close to the development team, in best case even part of the development team. The developers need to be able to be agile and be able to get questions, design etc verified fast to be able to continue the tasks on hand.

Whenever any BI project is successfully completed and goes LIVE then- a) Firstly the development team should take a break to rejuvenate themselves. b) The project team should be recognised for their efforts in some way maybe in the form of appreciation mail at least from the client. c) Share the success story of the project and the impact it has created with the higher authority and the whole organization. d) Consolidate all the feedback and discuss it internally within the team for future reference and better management. And lastly celebrate the success with the complete team.

Final step in the project is to celebrate the success of a project and giving credit to the whole team by acknowledging their efforts. Always we should deliver the good words shared by the client to the team which gives better motivation for them

Build with governance in mind. Your business intelligence creators and consumers will have different privileges, different tools, and different usage patterns. Different lines of business within your organization may need to tightly control who can access data and how. Knowing how you plan to enable all these different parties without creating an administrative nightmare and diminishing trust in data requires planning and forethought. Remember to approach this governance world through an empowerment lens. Governance isn't gatekeeping. Governance, done right, provides purposeful guardrails allowing analytics to scale in a standardized and secure fashion. Plus, it creates a searchable, traceable inventory of analytics.

Data Literacy is key to enable the whole organization's units with the required skills to utilize data and BI. For far too long data and BI were confined to a few people within organizations. In order to really democratize your data assets, upskill everyone and it will encourage collaboration and multi-use throughout the various departments within your organization.

In addition to the mentioned strategies, I would highlight the importance of communicating, with clear examples, how these teams can accelerate their knowledge on their organization's data ecosystem and how that can be a strategic advantage for future projects. Practically speaking, it can be as simple as realising there's a data model in the commercial deparment they didn't know existed which can now be leveraged to address a concrete business problem from a different department.
