In my experience, it comes down to communication and setting clear goals. Getting assigned tasks done and taking initiatives on some tasks (mostly in line with what has to be done and making it known to your boss to avoid conflict). Always ask question when you are in doubts or not, it always make things clear. However, avoid repetition of questions, or asking trivial questions because it comes across as "you don't know your job". It is quite dynamic in some cases, especially if your boss is not welcoming it will be a bit difficult to get along. But in any case, properly communicating, and setting clear goals help one establish a good working relationship with their superiors.

Take the project in mission mode with full understanding of its objective, boss vision alien with company moto. Get cross-verified your understanding before starting the project. Think and do out of the box to elevate boss position in company

Show proactive initiative: make it clear to your manager that you want the business to flourish and make suggestions how things could get better. Is something not working? Bring up but also suggest how to improve it. Be kind: Manager is also only a human being and needs kindness as well as anyone. Ask about their hobbies, friends and family. Ask for feedback and suggestions for improvement: You should get these anyway, but this demonstrates trust and desire for improvement. You will likely get more mostly good feedback anyway!

I agree that this one is top of the list. Even in situations where the working relationship is strained, communication on your intentions and obtaining information on your supervisor goals could bridge a gap between solutions and issues.

Keep your manager updated on what you are working on, receiving from him what he agreed on with other managers of him level and understanding the priority list of all projects/tasks is a crucial in terms of achieving goals.
