Problem Solving is an art where you need to bring many facts and data together, analyse that and find out the root cause. Post that you also need to find the optimum solution. I always mention that the two most important skills for problem solvers are: - Critical Thinking: To converge the data and facts in order to find a roit cause. - Creative Thinking: To diverge the solution finding and implementing the optimum solution. Some times, we need to also ask for clarity on how to go about the problem from people ahead of us. There is no new problem as such. We just need to know how the people ahead navigated through the problem so we can also so same.

All the contributions here are bang on. I however do believe that the most important step that gets missed out right at the beginning is to ACCEPT that there is a problem at hand. Most of the times, I have seen employees state that there is no problem at hand just because “this is how it’s always been” or “we have always done it this way” or “we have always had this way in the past” … etc etc. So first off, I believe that it’s important to understand that just because something was done in the past, it does not make it right. It still may have the potential for change & there may be underlying problems. ACCEPTING that a change may be needed is the first step. Thereafter, ofcourse, models such as CLEAR or FORDEC or likes are very effective.
