I’ve learnt that listening first makes a huge difference. I take time to understand where each person is coming from, then try to find common ground. I also make space for open chats and honest feedback, which helps build trust. We won’t always agree, but with mutual respect and clear communication, we stay on track and work through things together.

I begin by holding individual discussions to understand each member's perspectives and motivations. Then, I facilitate team-building activities that promote mutual understanding and respect. During team meetings, I set clear expectations for professional behavior and collaboration. I also encourage open communication and conflict resolution training to equip everyone with the skills to handle disagreements constructively. By fostering a culture of respect and cooperation, I guide the team towards harmonious and productive interactions.

People don’t get hired randomly. They’re here because there’s a need for their skill and what they bring to the table. If everyone was more of the same, we’d be limited. My first thing when de-escalating animosities in the workplace, is showing to the other part what, how and why this person is valuable. Why we want them to stay on the team and be motivated. And it goes both ways. Second, is to find what are the root causes of the conflicts. Is it just clashing personalities? Is someone dropping the ball? Is the process inefficient? Third, is there a joined project we can get these people to share? A small thing with a goal they need to achieve together? Usually, having the same objective helps with bonding!

For instance, during a cross-functional project, a team can collectively decide to have weekly check-ins to ensure alignment and address concerns. I’d work with the team to co-create clear behavioral norms. These are not just rules, but shared expectations on how we collaborate, communicate, and hold each other accountable. Setting norms helps prevent conflicts from escalating and creates a structure everyone can align with. As someone who leads by example, I’d make sure I model these behaviors consistently so the team sees I walk the talk.

Leadership isn’t about making everyone the same — it’s about making differences work. When team members have contrasting personalities, I’ve found one smart and human approach is to assign complementary roles based on natural strengths, anchored by a shared purpose. For example, pairing an introverted analyst with a visionary communicator allows each to shine where they’re strongest. The key is to co-create goals they both believe in — it builds respect, reduces friction, and turns differences into a strategic advantage. As leaders, our job is not to referee, but to orchestrate harmony through diversity.

I love conflicting personalities because it’s a great way to see our blind spots — and for my associates to see each other’s blind spots. One of the most utilised profiling methods is DISC, and by understating each profile and their priorities, we can build a more effective team! If I want to do a team cohesion day, I profiles will make the event fun, C profiles will organise the day, and S profiles can make sure everyone’s needs are taken care of — win, win, WIN!

When facing conflicting personalities, I focus on recognizing and leveraging each team member’s unique strengths. Years of leading a writing agency have taught me that differences, when managed well, can become assets. From there, I can map out a synergistic, streamlined team structure that doesn’t negate different personalities but leverages them.

I take time to understand what motivates each person and assign roles that play to those capabilities. When people feel seen for their value, tensions often ease naturally. Rather than forcing uniformity, I lead by creating space for complementary skills to coexist, turning differences into a competitive advantage.

Arranging regular team meetings can help ensure everyone has a voice; to listen and understand their thoughts and perspectives. It helps to identify the root causes of conflicts and misunderstandings. Setting clear, shared goals can align the team’s focus, helping to bridge differences and encouraging team building helps for betterment of morale. Actively Mentoring or Coaching, can be beneficial in addressing ongoing issues with PRESENCE. In a simple way: foster open communication, respect diverse perceptions, mediate conflicts impartially, and encourage collaboration by aligning team goals with individual strengths, promoting a harmonious and productive team environment; a source of thriving from owning and overcoming challenges!

Everyone is different, the role of any leader, including leader of self, is to e self aware. Be aware of one’s emotional triggers, emotions, and how to regulate emotions, their own and others. Regarding conflict, I like to think of this as productive conflict. Helping people deal directly with the source of the conflict by coaching them and holding them accountable for communicating and resolving on their own. If that doesn’t work, then the leader needs to intervene with support and encouragement for both.

When conflicts do surface, I’d address them directly but respectfully. I don’t believe in letting things simmer. I’d mediate conversations with fairness and empathy, focusing on behaviors, not personalities. Having navigated high-pressure environments for nearly two decades, I know the importance of staying calm, objective, and outcome-focused when emotions run high. Resolution isn’t about choosing sides—it’s about restoring alignment.

I’d foster an environment where tough conversations are encouraged—with clear limits, mutual respect, and sound judgment. Conflict isn’t the problem; avoiding it is. When we create space for honest dialogue, anchored in boundaries and empathy, we unlock real growth and team cohesion.

I would start with checking if people have clearly defined responsibilities and the team structure is what will enable the team to be successful. All conversations then should be around this and transparent and fair. The root cause of conflict in an organisation set up is majority of the times lack of clarity on goal, responsibility and transparency on the "Why".

I’d adapt my leadership style to meet the needs of the team. No two individuals—or situations—are alike. I’d remain flexible, applying a mix of coaching, mentoring, and direct guidance depending on what each person needs. My leadership style has always been “from within,” which means being in the trenches with the team while tailoring my approach to help them thrive, regardless of personality differences.

One more point to be added - Foster Psychological Safety: Beyond just open dialogue, actively cultivate an environment of psychological safety. This means creating a space where team members feel comfortable expressing differing opinions, even if those opinions might lead to conflict, without fear of judgment, retribution. By prioritizing psychological safety, you can create a more inclusive and resilient team that can navigate personality differences constructively and ultimately thrive.
