Artist at their first steps in this industry find using reference to be as much as useful as being ashamed of it. Maybe they have the perception that veteran artist no longer use reference at some point and then wish to achieve that level of knowledge by never show their reference material or not even using one while I believe this is one of the most important step to have and, honestly, show in a project. Even a veteran ends up having a reference material at some point of the work. If I could give a word of advice to any artist (not only in the 3D modeling) specially young one is to have a good source of reference and don't be ashamed to use one or even present it in a portfolio's project page.
