One thing I have found incredibly effective with students or trainees is to ensure they have the purpose of the subject. You want a student to be autonomous, he needs a reason for the subject. It has to something he can use in his life. Take math, measuring out a room and work out the paint needed. "Fulcrum" moved from significance to doingness by actual demonstrations helps greatly to give the incentive to learn.

Um dos aspectos mais importantes no processo de auto-avaliação é fazer sentido. Ou seja: o estudante precisa entender por qual razão ele está fazendo isso. Entender no que pode melhorar. Valorizar os pontos fortes, sem esquecer das fragilidades. Neste sentido, para mim, uma avaliação qualitativa é muito melhor do que uma atribuição de notas. É preciso ouvir o que o estudante tem a dizer. Sobretudo se o desempenho dele foi atrapalhado pelas características do docente, por exemplo, ou pelas ferramentas e metodologia da avaliação.

At the start of each quarter, I collaborate with my high school students and guide them to determine a performance goal and to identify strategies for achieving it. Students are vested and engaged in achievement. Each day we collect data that demonstrates progress on performance indicators. At the close of each quarter, students reflect on the progress they have made towards achieving their goal. During this self-evaluation, students assess data and honestly evaluate how their level of effort and the extent to which they implemented strategies for success impacted progress. Students then determine if they have achieved their goal, if it should be continued in the current quarter and if additional or alternative strategies are needed.
