What are some effective lecturing strategies for online teaching?

We have always run both. Lectures followed immediately by practicals that reinforce the knowledge taught with applied examples. Works well I think. Self learning I fear students misunderstand a lot of what they read. The best ones a re find probably but weaker students need more support.

I'm baffled that people continue to believe in the efficacy of a lecture-based model of education. Cognitive Science research strongly suggests that, at best, lectures will promote the acquisition of "inert knowledge" -- knowledge that cannot be reliably retrieved and applied during problem solving. Providing small amounts of help, advice, and feedback just in time in the context of solving realistic problems is much more likely to promote transfer to future problem solving in that the information acquired is much more likely to be encoded and indexed in a form that will be recalled and can be applied during future problem solving. This was borne out by our MS programs at CMU Silicon Valley and later technical certificate programs.

It is considered best practice to conduct the lecture first, followed by the practical session, to apply the gained knowledge and bridge the gap between theory and practice. I have been providing an exercise to solve the problem based on the student's self-learning from both sessions. This approach allows the student to acquire knowledge, practical application skills, and problem-solving abilities in the lecture topic/ area.

Introduce current topic, simultaneously revise the prior day topic. Their knowledge can be tested with the help of quizzes and crossword by making use of many such exercises so that they can develop interest in learning online. The students can be asked to share their screens and teachers can make them comfortable so that they can demonstrate their work by sharing the screens. Making the students at ease as if they are meeting in the physical classrooms.

Record it like a podcast, allowing students to download it. Keep it to around 30 minutes, and have an objectives section for each unit. Place keywords and concepts there, so that students can listen to the podcast lecture as they want. Your engagement will typically increase.

Gamification and Non-Assessed Quizzes Questions to test engagement typically results in the usual suspects responding. This means that most students are left in “receiving” mode. Quizzes can provide a powerful way to switch the student from “receiving” to “thinking”. However, formal, assessed quizzes are complex to administer (fairness) and if used too often can create a sense of being over-assessed. An approach I have used, is non-assessed quizzes based on the following principles: • Anonymous: having a go is more important than being right • Different styles: opinion, research, gamified with a leader board • Typically, 3 per lecture and aligned to short breaks • A post quiz discussion: aligning responses to course content

When I teach online, I try to make the environment comfortable and engaging for my students. Here's how I do it:- I always begin with a nice and courteous greeting. You know, a basic "Hi, everyone!" It makes everyone feel welcome and is a lovely way to begin our time together. Then instead of seeming like a formal academic I speak in a conversational tone. That tone is similar to catching up with a friend over coffee. To make things fresh, I don't use the same speaking style throughout. When I'm thrilled about a topic, I speed up a little, and when I'm not, I slow down to emphasise crucial points.

Learning is enhanced through engagement. Therefore, look for ways to engage the learner. Chris Walker and I describe engagement techniques in our book "Cybersecurity Training: A Pathway to Readiness." 1. Predict the future: ask the learner what may come next. 2. Q-Storming: set a five minute time limit and have teams prepare an answer to a question. Break and then come back and have a discussion. 3. Bookends: introduce a topic and ask about their previous knowledge and experience. Deliver a short lecture, and then revisit the original questions. We have aligned our approach with the ADDIE Model of Instructional Design, Bloom's Taxonomy of Cognitive Thought, and Kirkpatrick Evaluation.

When delivering online lectures, it's crucial to adapt your style for the medium and audience. A conversational tone, varied pitch and pace, and genuine enthusiasm are key to keeping listeners engaged. Avoid relying too heavily on scripts or slides – instead, focus on clear, confident delivery with gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact. Prioritize audio and video quality by using a headset or microphone and selecting a quiet, professional setting. Your attention to these details will enhance the effectiveness of your online lectures.

I truly believe that a dialogue were the student gets the fundamentals of the topic is key factor before the self learning process

The power of the Chat Window To re-engage with the students after breaks, I ask “can you see and hear me?”, with a “quickest response” challenge and a min of two responses to progress. This gamification plus a thank you to each student who responds increases the speed and quality of responses. I also encourage the use of emojis • Quicker for the student to respond 👍 and for me to scan • Sentiment is built in 👍 OK, 😀 OK and happy. • Share personality 😎 The chat window also provides the power to acknowledge, and respond later. This is especially true of the private chat window, the student can ask questions without the public glare. I can respect their privacy and respond in generic terms or privately when convenient.

Gamification tools such as Kahoot are really good at keep engagement. It’s fun and interactive and students can really feel their knowledge awareness.

In addition to the excellent suggestions already made, the reward system has to be attractive so that the learner is fully committed to completing tasks. Also insistence on keeping to timelines by ensuring there are penalties for non adherence can further encourage the learner to complete the assignments on time. The tendency to be slack can be reduced by a clear communication of what the expectations are and the required adherence to timelines. Help Desks can also be useful for learners experiencing difficulty in understanding what is needed. There may be a need for prompts at certain periods to remind the learner to be more active where there is a need to carry out a particular task .

A student that is involved in the lecture is going to have a better learning experience. Make sure you provide a safe space so they can interact both answering as well as asking questions.

Well learning management systems (LMS) have profoundly improved over the years. Engaging is now super efficient. You can ask them (students) to use emotions to gauge where they are and how comfortable they are with content. Using break out groups can also create a great atmosphere in tutorial style classes, or simply give students an opportunity to share in there understanding. Some LMS systems offer the opportunity to poll, which you can use for questions to ensure understanding. Incorporating and learning what your LMS offers with your unique teaching style could even make online classes more interactive than traditional in person classrooms

To teach programming I use screensharing to show a whiteboard and an online editor, preferably Replit, to write and run code on the fly. I never show pre-written code, we always start with the requirement and build the code from scratch, using the whiteboard to make things clearer when needed. This way there is always something new on the screen and attention can be held for a bit longer. Little pauses can be incorporated where students can open Replit on their own devices to test things out.

In online mathematics lectures, the use of multimedia and technology is mandatory. It is certainly effective in increasing students' engagement levels. I invite students to write answers on the shared screen and encourage peer tutoring and group discussion where possible. One student can write steps or the final answer on the shared screen and other students can verify that answer and give feedback. Teachers need to invest time in planning each lesson and identify key teaching moments in the lesson. One way teacher-led presentations should be replaced by interactive presentations in which instructions and formative assessments are interleaved. This is possible with the help of easy-to-use tools, such as Nearpod.

For instance, you can easily track the difficulty level of various parts of a learning material by evaluating the time taken in assimilating the individual aspects or from the aggregated performance in a particular quiz question.

Focusing on competencies, rather than knowledge, should be key in any educational setting. So rather than testing for knowledge, tasking learners with an applied project to demonstrate their skills and e.g. presenting this during the last session, will give a more holistic evaluation of what they have actually learned during the module.

Yes it's always useful to get feedback and to reflect on how to improve your lecturing, but who has time to attend workshops etc? I have three papers I need to write, I desperately need to get a new grant, I have projects I need to supervise... bottom line: I am who I am, and I have a thousand balls to juggle. Many students like my delivery, others don't - I can live with that. I'm not an opera singer wanting to make my audience happy, they are not 'customers', nor is it my responsibility to bend over backwards to make them 'engage'. If the students can't be bothered to engage, even with a lacklustre lecture because I'm having a hard day - then get reading and find inspiration elsewhere! Otherwise they've chosen the wrong subject.

Covid-19 forced all of us (teachers and students) to (re)create a new format of classes. I felt motivated to create PPT (summary) and Word (text) and incorporate videos, images, and animations to help to make the lecture more engaging and interactive. PPT helped my first part, sumarizing the content and help me and students to share experiences. The second part , students prepare a storytelling or a summary to present, based on their knowledge learned and materials posted. Evaluations have been always positive

I found Tactiq (Chrome extension) pretty useful, because after each session with Google Meet, I got the full transcript of the session, plus certain bullet points of the reunion and the percentage of time that each member was participating, with that information I can get a clearer view on my performance and the group dynamics.

Make it more interactive, by using breakaway rooms for discussing ideas and concepts. This also means that preperation before the class needs to be considered in the form of reading or applied work. A case study approach to the break away rooms also helps the student to identify issues and apply solutions. Furthermore, I also enjoy using guest lecturers to present their careers trajectories and showcase their work in the field. This captivates the audience as well.

Y en tiempos de educación inclusiva, no olvidar que tenemos personas y que todas son diferentes en cuanto a sus capacidades, habilidades, necesidades, intereses, etc. y es necesario adaptar los contenidos y aplicar diferentes estrategias que ayuden a compartir contenidos flexibles y adaptables.
