What is the optimal calibration process for LiDAR sensors in robotics?

LiDAR sensor emits a pulse of light and measures the time, takes for the light to capture back from a surface area. Doing like this repeatedly and scanning the environment, the LiDAR sensor can create a 3D point cloud of the scene.

Remote sensing technology LiDAR employs pulsed lasers to measure distances. Short laser pulses are reflected back to the sensor. Time it takes reflected pulses to return to the sensor is used to calculate object distance. The object's distance is calculated from flight time. LiDAR can produce a 3D environment point cloud by measuring many points. It's used in autonomous vehicles, mapping, archaeology, and robotics. As technology advances, more uses are envisaged.

Simply put, LiDAR is like echolocation, but instead of waves of sound is rays of light, the more rays and the more dense the points of the rays are, the higher fidelity an image is. I like to imagine LiDAR as a supplementary part of a whole system that relies on that data for better operation
