Keep it simple. Pick your best programmer’s style and instruct everyone to make their indiscernible from that style. This is the easiest standard to follow. Use the blame feature of IDEs to double check and coach consistency. The particular style isn’t as important as consistency. This is the easiest approach to instruct and learn and works great unless you’re so called best programmer is still using Hungarian notation or other weird styles.

Group code reviews are mostly a waste of time. Have a simple style—follow your best programmer—and simple metrics standards. It’s very hard to write schlock and hit metrics. Then, coach one in one. Group code reviews just embarrass and alienate people.

The best way to make a team follow the appropriate coding standards is making them aware of what should be followed. It includes: - Effective code reviews to be done based on coding standards, design principles followed, can it be optimized, does it cater to right coding standards, all tests covered etc. Instead of doing so because something just works right hence it can be merged. - Frequent discussions and workshops with the leads and technical architect to relook project architecture for improvements and share knowledge.
