Databases are NOT for storing data. They're for accessing it. So, I disagree with others who say star schemas are only good at simple data warehouse uses. They work great for complex ones too. What is simple... is accessible to the business. What is accessible to people can be used, and this is the highest calling of a database. I say we should vigorously resist the urge to snowflake... UNLESS you're designing software. Software is accessing data using code, and code is ideal for building rules to access complex sets of joins. Business users are less adept at joins. Put simply... if a machine is accessing: Snowflake all you like. But, if a person is querying it: Star is the way to go.
