The benefits of NLP are widely known. For me though, most definitely the integrity of its use is something that we need to be constantly aware of! It has already been utilised to brainwash people for nefarious reasons. People, countries, organisations have their own agendas! So, with the increasing impact of AI, how do we differentiate between what is real, what is right and what we should "absorb"?🤔

Code-Switching or Language Alternation: - Multilinguals (speakers of more than one language sometimes) use elements of multiple languages when conversing with each other. Thus, code-switching is the use of more than one linguistic variety in a manner consistent with the syntax and phonology of each variety. (source: Wikipedia). We will start to see significant improvement in adopting code-switching approaches and models which can understand elements of different languages being used in the same sentence. This is a more natural way of expression rather than sticking to a specific language. Improvements in this field are still an unexplored area. We can expect significant development with respect to code-switching in the future.

Making NLP explainable and trustworthy is key. It's like, if NLP tools can tell us 'how' they got an answer, we'd trust them more, right? Especially, when they help in serious stuff like health or legal advice. So, the future is not just about getting the right answers from NLP, but also understanding 'how' it got there. This way, we can use NLP more responsibly and really make the most out of it in different areas.

Similar to having LLM's (Large Language Models), there should be efforts to have LLD's(Large Language Datasets), where collaborators can add, modify, rate, and evaluate the consistency of the data. This will to an extent curb bias, inconsistency and reliability issues. Models trained on these kinds of community-managed datasets (quality datasets-peer reviewed) can be a game changer for the models to generalise better and be robust enough.

Computational requirements, and latency, are the main reasons why I think that LLMs won't become the most used models in production. However, they are still useful, you can first train large models to tackle the task in a dev environment. When you trained a large model to the desired accuracy, you can use model distillation to train a smaller model with an accuracy close to the larger one. Keep in mind that LLMs learned a lot of tasks at once, while you usually only have 1 or a few tasks to solve. So there are a lot of parameters and computational efforts that you can get rid of.

The early traction is in the consumer space. E.g., ChatGPT Plus users can now move from text-only to conversational experiences grounded in image context. Some of the trends which were not mentioned and I see them coming are: 1. Explainable AI: Large Language Models are complex and I see there going to be more push from customers to make these models explainable 2. Fine-tuning: Even though new heavy models come into market, I see efforts for fine-tuning will keep increasing 3. Ethics and Compliance: Todays models still have a lot of bias where these are not applied to certain industries or use cases. I see there will be many efforts to reduce these bias going forward.

Future communications will be advanced AI Technologies that involve NLP applications (conversational AI). With more research, we can create sustainable infrastructure around ethics. Ethics is a blurred line… We should not only call upon AI leaders but regular everyday people to give feedback. Race, religion, politics, war, love, etc… All of these topics and more don’t really have edges nor borders. Don't forget that AI was and is a philosophy. Cognitive technologies are based on human learning, perception and action. There are many perceptions that behold the world that we live in. Generally speaking, it's worth considering to use NLP for output that requires high accuracy and low creativity (e.g. looking for answers from a SOP document). In scenarios where higher creativity, and more human-like tone of voice is required (e.g. generating ideas for a brainstorming session), more advanced LLM may be more fit-for-purpose. So it'd be practical to consider a combination of both during the transition period.
