Just from the top of my head... thinking out loud. Standardization is a limitation, the fact that they are different Standards to floating-point is an issue. I know that the IEEE 754 standard aims to provide consistency in representing floating-point numbers across different computing systems. But it would be great if we just did not have to come up with a standard. The existence of different standards poses challenges at times, especially when dealing with interoperability between systems that adhere to different floating-point standards. Again just thinking out loud.

For most floating point numbers all arithmetic operations are inexact, i.e. involve the so-called rounding error. Performing many operations in a sequence results in an accumulation of the rounding error that may become so large that the final result gets meaningless. Even with a small number of operations, some algebraic expressions could lead to a dramatic loss of accuracy. The simplest and most know example is evaluating a*a - b*b = (a - b) * (a + b) where a anb b are close to each other. The latter expression gives a much more accurate result than the former in inexact arithmetic of floating point numbers.

Following on Navansh's comment below, I once encountered an error in the result of a several-thousand-line program for computing atomic structure. It was traceable to using an approximate value of pi, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, as input data. Such errors are always found in the very last place one looks! BTW a useful mnemonic for pi is "How I need a drink, alcoholic of course, after the awful lectures involving quantum mechanics," but the point is, one should always introduce pi, or any other mathematical constant, in a way that is consistent with machine precision, e.g. pi = 4 * arctan (1).

There are various types of floating point numbers, the most common are single and double precision. A software engineer or data scientist needs to choose the type suitable for their application. The single precision calculations may be expected, although not always do, run twice faster than their double counterpart, but will result in the output that is at least twice less accurate.
