What are the best ways to prepare for a User Experience (UX) hackathon?

Understanding the game makes you a better player. Think around logistics, team, rules, and how you want to prepare. I like to research the theme, cool companies and products, and what's happening in that industry. Come to the hackathon with some ideas in mind will help you and your team. I pack a day-bag for the occasion - Instant coffee - Candy - Water - Phone charger Anything ready to hack. Some hackathon are hours. Some are days. Be prepared. Have fun. Hack away.

Understand the UX hackathon's subject and problem statement in great detail. For instance, if the theme is "improving online education platforms," make sure you have a thorough awareness of the unique difficulties users encounter with distant learning and the prospects for improving the entire learning experience.

Simply follow this / the UX framework. Learn to empathize with users, define the users problem, prototype (wireframes and UI) using tools, test it with various personas and gain insights in order to improve. Keep iterating when needed.

A transformation is easier to adopt the less complex it is.

You spend your days with your colleagues, so if you get the chance, I strongly advise you to form a team with people you're not used to working with. The beauty of design lies in a mixed, heterogeneous team, with different backgrounds (as Don Norman says), so don't hesitate to team up with people who don't look like you! it will only enrich the ideation phases. Finally, take the time to get to know each other, as some profiles won't dare express their ideas freely without breaking down social barriers beforehand.

Form a team by working with people whose abilities are complementary to your own. For example, if your area of expertise is user research, think about working with a UI designer and a developer to form a multidisciplinary team that can provide a thorough and well-executed solution.

I strongly recommend joining a multidisciplinary team comprising individuals with diverse skills. Seek out not only varied technical expertise but also soft skills, general knowledge, and diverse backgrounds. The broader the range of skills within your team, the better. Having someone who comprehends the business aspect can be immensely beneficial. Additionally, it's essential to establish good interpersonal relationships, especially considering the hours or even days spent working together. Lastly, effective communication is key. Despite potential challenges in dealing with others, make a genuine effort to articulate your ideas clearly and be receptive to the thoughts and suggestions of your team members. It's a collaborative effort.

Choose members with diverse skills that complement each other. This includes everyone. Establish clear and open channels of communication from the start. Decide on tools and methods for collaboration, such as Slack for communication, Trello for task management, or Figma for design collaboration. Agree on a process for making decisions and resolving disagreements. Hackathons can be high-pressure environments, and having a plan to address conflicts can help keep the team on track. Break down the project into tasks and distribute them among team members. If possible, meet before the hackathon to practice working together, especially if the team members are not acquainted. This can help iron out any kinks in how you collaborate.

I'd like to add a nuance: it's essential to "revise" your design tools and methodologies before a hackaton, but don't be put off by methodologies brought to you by other people that you're not familiar with or used to! A hackaton is also an opportunity to discover new things, so you can continue to shape your design profile and enrich your skills. Be open minded!

Have a simplified design thinking framework tailored for the limited time of a hackathon. This involves: Empathize: Conduct quick user research to understand the audience. Test: Validate your prototype with quick, iterative user feedback. Have templates and assets ready for use in your chosen design tools. This can include UI kits, icons, and component libraries. Time is the most essentiel part of UX hackathon. It's how great ideas are cooked. In my experience, the best designs I created with my team in a hackathon are the ones that had a powerful balance between research and result. In the Adobe Creative Jam that we won, each team member had a specific role to play so it's important from the start to identify these roles especially strong point/skills of each member.

For example, if you want to efficiently optimize your workflow, make sure you have access to collaborative whiteboarding tools, prototyping software, and user testing platforms.

Practice telling an engaging story that focuses on both the problems consumers encounter and the creative solutions your team has created. Create a memorable and compelling presentation that connects with the judges and audience by utilizing visuals and storytelling approaches.

Let me emphasize the importance of using simple words for easy comprehension. Your audience during the pitch or presentation may not all have been part of the testing and study. To effectively convey your message throughout the presentation, opt for straightforward language that's easy to understand.

Remember to project confidence, passion, and enthusiasm when delivering your pitch. Make sure that your presentation flows smoothly, and you can effectively convey your UX design process and the value of your solution. With enough practice and refinement, you'll be well-prepared to present your hackathon project persuasively.

Remember that you've gone through a process of diving deep into the details to understand your problem and why your solution works to solve for it. Your audience probably doesn't have the time or the attention-span to walk the exact path you did. Your job is to boil it all down to the essentials. Consider what your audience absolutely needs know to fully understand your presentation and the product. (1) What are the missing pieces you need to provide the audience? (2) Why does the audience need to know these things? (3) Could an audience member walk away from your presentation and easily explain to someone else what you've proposed?

Be prepared to work together and support one another during the hackathon. Join together with other teams to share thoughts and learn from their various strategies. To deepen your awareness of UX approaches and create valuable relationships within the UX community, you may, for instance, debate various design methodologies and problem-solving techniques with other participants.

Most importantly HAVE FUN! Hackathons are often a break from the monotony, designed to make you think outside the box and promote collaboration between teams, departments, or at events with like-minded individuals. We all want to win but the biggest take away at these events should be what you learned. Sometimes you learned something critical about a product or process that can improve your daily workflow. Other times, it's the connections you met there when you huddled up and worked on something together. Whatever it is you learned - that is often the biggest prize from a Hackathon.

Be open to listening to everyone's ideas and learning from your teammates' different perspectives. It is important to stand out from the rest of the teams at a hackathon, so every idea, no matter how seemingly crazy it is, can be helpful towards moving to a design that is unique but also a great solution to the given problem.

Incorporating both fun and a learning mindset into your hackathon experience can lead to a more enjoyable and productive event. It's an opportunity not only to showcase your skills but also to expand your knowledge and grow as a UX designer.

Go in it with an open mind. UX Hackathons are a great way to see how other professionals work, their processes, and their execution style. Have fun while prepping for these sort of events and get inspiration from UX in other places outside of your immediate realm. IE: Study the design and usability of hardware, everyday items like potato peelers, etc. Inspiration can be found anywhere!

Be prepared to pivot at any point in the hackathon. There might not be as much time to conduct research, or the team may discover new information your team probably wants to include in the solution you're building out. It's also okay to not have everything done. You can present these as learning opportunities and potential next steps for taking the project beyond the hackathon.
