What are the advantages and disadvantages of using vias, planes, and ground loops in PCB design?

The last sentence is overgeneralized and it makes vias appear as something that always degrades signal integrity. The reality is that most designs, including digital systems, can use multiple vias and they will function normally without creating SI problems and EMI problems as long as there is a nearby reference via on each layer change. Vias only need to be carefully designed above about 3-5 GHz, because this is the frequency range where a via will create a deviation in input impedance along a trace. Above that frequency limit, the LC impedance model for vias also fails and cannot be used. The only way to calculate the impedance of a via in the frequency range where it matters is to use an electromagnetic field solver.

The biggest problem of this article lies in its title! The title is at best misleading and inappropriate! The article title gives the impression that it will discuss advantages and disadvantages for vias, planes and ground loops! Using proper vias and planes is a necessity in today’s PCB design whereas there is no advantage for a ground loop! These are separate topics which have very little in common except encountered in PCB design and testing! Perhaps each should be discussed separately and in greater depth! It is understood that this medium is being used to get feedback from real professionals to train the AI algorithm. Nothing wrong with that but this training would be more successful if the scope of topic is focused and narrower!

Vias are quite an important feature for electronic designing. With the signal connectivity between Planes it helps in thermal management , Signal integrity and also signal isolation on the board with multiple used as boundary. --With the parameters of trace like current, Frequency and in case of high voltage the distance of vias and number of vias needs to be optimised. --Size of the vias decides the amount of current and LC components along with plane thicknesses. --In some applications where vias in greater quantity is required for thermal relief or High current trace, vias needs to be reduced in size and manufacturability has to be considered. -- Avoiding vias in the trace for current sensitive applications.

Not all vias are created equally. Many manufactures do not understand proper metallurgy to form vias that survive reflow assembly thermal excursions. Most use the "rote" method of processes. How does one separate electrical issues contaminated with latent defects?

Power planes do not automatically provide stable voltage just by virtue of being a plane layer. They can only provide stable power to components where stable power is absolutely important (fast digital processors) when they have a ground plane on the next layer. In many systems, you don't need power planes, you just need large rails, and multiple rails can be placed on the same layer and share the same ground reference.

Cu is the accepted conductor for planes. Additional materials attached to Cu can deal with capacitance if EEs can get out of the way.

Ground loops are not really a "poor layout" problem (that term is incredibly ambiguous and it just illustrates how bad AI is at articulating anything technical). Ground loops also have nothing to do with ground bounce. They are entirely a problem of system-level grounding strategies, where you have different grounding points that maintain some potential difference between them.

Wrong again. You can use vias on high-speed traces if they are designed correctly. It is possible to design a via with 50 Ohms characteristic/input impedance, I've actually shown in multilpe of my articles that this is the case. I've done it on the input of radar antennas operating at 77 GHz as long as moderately wideband impedance matching is applied, one of these systems is in test now as I write this post. You just need stitching vias around the signal via and an appropriately sized antipad in the reference planes.

Cost, time, ability to redraw circuit paths, iteration allowance to zero in on best concept. Most only think about placing components on the exterior surfaces because of fear of mistakes and defects to allow repair design corrections.

Ferrite beads should not be used for power integrity unless you can prove you need them. Connecting power rails is an application of ferrites that shows contradictory results, as shown in a past DesignCon paper and experimental results from other experts. The ferrite will: 1. Create excessive noise from power rails or when core voltages on a processor fail to power up seen as overshoots/undershoots. This can cause your processor to continuously restart and never boot, I have observed this directly. 2. Impede the ability for fast I/Os to function due to the ferrite's resistance at mid-high frequencies, which then creates excessive noise on the power rail you are trying to isolate with a ferrite. It's a recipe for EMC test failure.

Suppose thin low-k dielectric layers can be formed between copper layers along with conventional use of organic dielectric layers?

This statement is bogus or at best misleading. Current always flow in a loop. Having a solid GND plane will minimize the current loops by allowing the signal return current to come as close as possible to the signals. Minimizing the current loops will prevent radiation and EMC issues as well as lowering the inductance in the power distribution network. Single-point or star grounding scheme is a thing of the past and has nothing to do with modern design and signal integrity.

Star grounding should not be used in almost every instance, it is a decades-old approach and has no relevance in modern systems except in specialized low-frequency analog and sometimes in audio. The reason is very simple: susceptibility to EMI and generation of EMI. Star grounding requires signals be routed right alongside their ground traces. Instead, use a uniform ground plane, it will have higher shielding effectiveness, low impedance for return currents, and therefore there will be minimal voltage drops along the ground net.
