CSS Custom Properties are a highly efficient tool when it comes to ensuring consistency within a CSS stylesheet. If we wish to declare a foreground / background contrast of rgb(31, 31, 31) / rgb(245, 247, 249) in <main>, but the reverse in <header>, we can set up the following Custom Properties in our CSS: :root { --color-01: rgb(31, 31, 31); --color-02: rgb(245, 247, 249); } main { color: var(--color-01); background-color: var(--color-02); } header { color: var(--color-02); background-color: var(--color-01); } Later on, if we update the value for either Custom Property, that update will be reflected across the entire stylesheet, wherever the Custom Property is referenced.

Grids are two-dimensional in nature, the two axis being rows and columns. More traditional box or flex layouts are one-dimensional, so to add spacing between actual, visible elements in your layout, you have to add 'empty' elements to fill the empty gap between your visible elements. This creates bloat in your HTML. In grid, you can create any (rows)x(columns) layout you desire, and furthermore, the elements inside the grid don't even have to be ordered in any particular way inside the HTML-- They can instead be reorganized via the CSS, and using different @media rules, this means that you can very easily create different layouts for different devices and screen sizes, all while keeping the actual HTML very simple and easy to read.
