Something that's done a lot of good for me is to build. Think of something that you find interesting, then distill it down to its simplest form. If it's still too expensive or complicated, go smaller. Instead of building a bipedal robot, try building a leg. Or just try moving a motor really precisely. You'll learn so much about fundamental challenges, and that knowledge will allow you to convince others to support your next step.

I'll add that you should allow your curiosity to roam. I've often seen the best types of ideas coming from connections made between vastly disparate fields. Try out hobbies and instruments, read publications or magazines that have nothing to do with robotics, spend time in a new environment and with new people. It'll give you access to a wider range of problems to solve and a wider range of solutions to apply to your own problems.
