To make control efficient: 1. Derive the nonlinear dynamics and take every environmental factor in consideration. 2. Use multiple feedback loops to control and/or dynamically filter the output signal with Kalmann / any adaptive filter. 3. Reduce delay, noise and disturbance with system identification and compensation. To make control robust, you must know the operating bounds on your output. To make control adaptive, be ready for the large controller efforts. For easy control, PID tuning with kalmann filter goes with any microcontroller. For real-time systems, better go for impedance control or force-position hybrid control for best performance. To save the control efforts you may place a switch on the slower performing loop.
