Defining goals and indicators is crucial for measuring learning's impact on innovation. In my approach, aligning learning outcomes with organizational innovation goals is key. For instance, measuring the number of viable ideas generated post-training or the increase in collaborative projects can be effective indicators. Setting tangible, quantifiable goals, like a percentage increase in innovative product launches or patents filed, offers a clear metric to gauge the impact of learning on creative processes and outcomes. It's about translating learning into measurable innovation.

This is an interesting topic to explore, because the connection may not sit where you think! Innovation and creativity require a certain comfort with risk, and a great way to increase risk appetite is to create a psychologically safe environment that supports & celebrates people taking risks. Learning environments can support this by creating spaces where it is safe to fail while exploring new skills. Once someone sees how this works in that learning environment, they can take that to their work while on the job. As learning professionals, we have a responsibility to create that psychologically safe environment for people to be vulnerable in while learning new skills, so it's a bit of a fringe benefit!

Some other things to think about in the context of risk is to try and work using a "fail fast mentality". This is potentially an accelerator for learning and improvement, which might also prompt creativity. Having a safe environment in which to try and prototype ideas.
