How can you apply neural networks to education?

In today's scenario, students' interest towards the tradational education system is degrading exponetially. To track the students behavoirs and to trace their interest , neural networks can be deployed. This will be shoot the students; interests towards their education. With this, teaching can be enlightened with the reduced stress and more enjoyable .

I do see the a tremendous potential for neural networks in every aspect of life if we build , train and evaluate them methodically, as far as education is concerned a lot of ideas spring to mind , like student performance evaluation , recommendations for future career paths based on the students performance in particular subjects as neural networks can be fed with data combinations of features that lead to a particular path and so on , even more important is the performance improvement by proposing personalized solutions that help students overcome issues they always struggle to understand or even have interest in learning like math , programming. I do see neutral networks empowering teachers to achieve their goals effectively

Using LLM's like GPT-4 to simplify lessons so students can understand them better is a huge opportunity. For example: PCA (Principal Component Analysis) simplified with GPT4: Imagine you're at a party where are people dancing in all sorts of directions. But you notice that most of the movement is happening in two main directions: back and forth, and side to side. If you had to describe the activity with just a few main movements, these would be the ones. PCA is like finding those main movements. In data, instead of dance moves, we have features or variables. PCA helps us find the main patterns or "directions" where our data varies. This is useful because we might have too much data, and want to simplify it without losing key patterns.

Neural networks in education enable personalized learning, adapting to students' needs and progress. They power recommendation systems, suggest relevant content, and automate assessments, providing valuable feedback. They model student behaviors and learning styles, aiding in targeted instruction and intervention. These networks also facilitate predictive analytics to optimize resources, support at-risk students, and refine question classification to enhance teaching effectiveness. This application of artificial intelligence makes learning more personalized, efficient, and responsive to student needs.

Every student's learning journey is unique and marked by individual pacing, needs, and challenges. One of the most challenges of building robust AI systems is data quality and availability. This becomes even more tougher in the education sector applications. I'm currently working on one massive AI project to help high school students in Ghana but can't find the needed data for this project. My only resort is web scraping which can affect data quality and lead to legal issues later. The existence of different educational systems across many countries also make modelling difficult. The most pressing problem, to me, is how to prevent students from over-relying solely on these AI systems without being innovative especially when they're in their early school stages. When AI isn't used responsibly, it can kill students' innovation.

The problem with latest Neural Networks technology, LLMs is its inability to continuously learn while unlearning incorrect knowledge. This is the critical difference between a human teacher and a LLM. As training a LLM from scratch is expensive we need much advanced technology to use it for adapting with new knowledge, significantly unlearning the old knowledge that are different from the new knowledge.

When designing neural network models for educational applications, I think data quality is our foremost consideration along with the reliability. The presence of unstructured datasets can pose a challenge for neural network models, necessitating filtering and clustering before the data can be effectively utilized. Additionally, ethical considerations (human rights, privacy, legal) are a significant part of the design process. Therefore, prior to deployment for educational applications, we ensure these algorithms consider inclusivity for students and teachers, regardless of their backgrounds.

As I see it, the successful integration of AI in the education system relies heavily on the presence of reliable and comprehensive data that can aid in the development of effective models. Access to high-quality data is essential for leveraging AI technology effectively in education.

Here is a good example worth mentioning. In the research paper “The Potential for the Use of Deep Neural Networks in e-Learning Student Evaluation with New Data Augmentation Method” by Andrzej Cader, a unique neural network module is proposed. This module aims to create a customised learning journey for students within an e-learning system. It does this by evaluating student progress at every learning stage, a process that can be incredibly time-consuming and strenuous. The proposed model addresses this challenge by automating the assessment process using Deep Learning techniques. A novel data augmentation method, known as Asynchronous Data Augmentation through Pre-Categorization (ADAPC), is employed to enhance this solution.

While it requires a combination of neural networks, we’re already seeing educational solutions that allow people to enter a complete digital simulation that closely mirrors real live, allowing people to practice, get feedback, and try again in a completely secure environment. This not only allows people to practice and learn without the fear of real-life consequences, the rich experiential data provides feedback and insights that dynamically change their development pathways.

In a few years, every child will have a dedicated AI Personal tutor, who is infinitely patient and knowledgeable, able to give all children in the class the customised help and support they need to succeed. It will know their learning style and tailor the lessons and homework around their strengths and weaknesses. Real in class teachers will still always be needed but the advancements in Education in the next decades are going to be incredible.

I believe that addressing the balance between humans and machines in education is pivotal. While neural networks can process information and adapt learning quickly, the human touch is irreplaceable for fostering creativity, critical thinking, and empathy. Educators play a crucial role in guiding students, interpreting nuanced situations, and providing personalized feedback, which machines can't replicate. With regard of neural network behaviour. In his book “Gradient Expectations: Structure, Origins, and Synthesis of Predictive Neural Networks” Keith L. Downing mentioned how neural systems been thoroughly analysed from physicochemical energetic perspectives as discussed by Sterling and Laughlin in 2015 and Stone in 2018. Downing thinks there is more abstract concept of energy, derived from spin-glass theory, which serves as a robust metric for evaluating neural network behaviour and guiding their adaptation. This concept forms the basis for more sophisticated metrics that associate energy and ‘enerbility’ with prediction in neural networks.

While neural networks promise transformational change in education, it's critical to consider the mathematical constraints that underlie these models, such as the vanishing gradient problem, which could impact the effectiveness of long-term learning in an educational AI system. Additionally, an over-reliance on neural networks without robust adversarial training could inadvertently reinforce educational biases. These technical hurdles, while surmountable, necessitate a multi-disciplinary approach integrating computational neuroscience, pedagogical theory, and even philosophy of mind to truly revolutionize education.

Is education simply 'cognitive training' that can be done just as easily by an AI tutor as it can with a human? The jury is still out. In my view, it is important to maintain a holistic view of education, not disregarding the idea that human-to-human interactions may offer developmental benefits that a machine cannot replicate. There is a chance that a portion of society will not want their children raised by "robots" or AI instructors. Therefore, it is important to consider ways in which AI can enhance human-to-human teaching. I suspect that these are profound.
