How can women get promoted in male-dominated fields?

Creo que lo más importante es alinearse con lo que nos une no con lo que nos separa. Comprometerse con el Liderazgo de Servicio es una fórmula muy valiosa para afrontar situaciones de este tipo. Si eres líder de servicio, conseguirás la confianza la autoridad y la capacidad de influir en otros seas hombre o mujer. Ello dará lugar a que el ascenso se produzca. La lealtad es uno de los valores más importante para los hombres si lo eres y lo visibiliza s te incluirán en el equipo y tendrás las oportunidades que te merezcas. Ello unido al trabajo por la excelencia profesional. Importante no te limites tú misma. Si existe oportunidad presentate y a por ello.

I was once interviewing candidates for a hydropower apprenticeship program when a minority female came before our panel. She was a veteran and single mother. She interviewed well and almost made the cut. She asked a single question at the end, "how can I better prepare myself if I'm not selected for this position"? I told her that she should consider getting certified in HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) to beef up her resume. She did exactly that and the next year when she appeared before the panel, she was a shoe in. I see women rising above men quite often in my line of work. The barriers that once held them back are gone. Don't assume you're at a disadvantage just because you're female. Go for it!

Be prepared and not presumptuous. Know your natural talents as well as your proven credentials. Be clear and concise especially if entering a male dominated sector. The increased attention on diversity and equality means that a female candidate has an advantage rather than not ..yet don't play the equality card on demand. Research the role and also the sector competition and current data on women in leading positions. Be confident and relaxed. Have questions as well as answers that show that you have professional kudos and drive. Never apologize for anything you feel lacking, yet be sure of what you don't want as well as what you desire.

Having wise mentors (male and female) and a few male advocates who value a woman's impact in male dominated arenas is an important advantage. Be sure of your own intelligence and knowledge about the role you seek and the culture that exists in male dominated sector. Check out the potential demands of the role and question whether the culture is open minded and respectful of emotional integrity and valuing personal as well as professional performance. Be honest with your own experiences in male dominated business environment. The values and principles laid out in the corporation documents is a good place to look.

Your network is your net worth. And your network can be an incredibly powerful tool to be seen and heard. I’ve been working in male dominated fields since 30 years. The most powerful tool was my talent, my will to perform and go the extra mile back and forth and once again ;) and whenever I asked for help it was given to me. Most people will help and support if you ask! So don’t be afraid to ask for assistance.

This is key; particularly if there is someone within the network who could become a mentor or “sponsor”. It’s not who you know but who knows you.

Building your network is said repetitively, but it is important! Creating your brand and network is crucial to being given a seat at the table. People talk and it's important to build a good reputation. You never know who is speaking about you behind closed doors.

Professional presence for women in male dominated sectors is key. As you network, develop your "brand" in everything you do...in your postings, articles, presentations and interactions, be present and natural yet always professional. This does not mean acting like a man. However be your most natural "you" as a woman. I study gender dynamics archetypes in men and women, and women with a natural "masculine" mind often display a strong logic and ideas driven and eclectic in connecting with men, while other women are more likely to network through an intuitive more "feminine " sensitivity" with men. These different styles of women in business networking often conflict with the traditional stereotypes of "straightforward action mode" of men.

Construir una buena red de contactos y hacer conscientemente networking es uno de los pilares de la progresión profesional. Sabemos que las mujeres nos relacionamos de forma diferente a los hombres, pero eso no tiene que ser óbice para fomentar las relaciones y buscar los espacios de network. En el mundo anglosajón es muy habitual y común, a veces en la cultura más latina no se propicia de una forma natural, pero es posible aprender!! Sobre todo, no dejes de hacer network por pereza, créate una agenda y sobre todo, escoge muy bien dónde tienes que estar para que te vean. Ah! y el network se cultiva, no esperes resultados de hoy para mañana.

Atreverse a ser visible y construir tu marca personal es esencial para seguir creciendo y asumiendo nuevos retos profesionales. Es darse el espacio para identificar tus fortalezas así como las oportunidades que tengas en el presente para potencializar tanto tus competencias técnicas como de liderazgo, autoestima y confianza, e, impulsar la capacidad para generar redes de colaboración estratégicas. Responder a 3 preguntas claves es relevante para desarrollar tu marca personal: ¿En Qué soy buena/o? ¿Cómo soy de distinto/a? ¿A Quién me dirijo? Para mí, si hacemos match entre la marca personal y la marca de empresa en donde están conectados los propósitos el resultado es absolutamente provechoso para desarrollar potencial.

In today's fast evolving business arena, women are scrutinized even more than past decades of "me too" discrimination, quotas and women's demands for equality built resistance in very male dominated sectors. To counter this, I advise female candidates to step into a new paradigm of "proof" and use the female advantage, note professionally earned talent and natural/personal experience in business; create a portfolio of achievements and accomplishments that add value and drive a success synergy when added to the male "proof credentials". Women climb a different path to the top. Showcase the advantages and complementary features that a woman adds to business as a woman!

It is as simple as you leave half the talent outside the CEO office, if the traditional Board does not consider women. Who think it is wise to let half the talent pool disappear? They do not think that country-wise in Sweden and Finland. They made regulation about percentages of women in top positions and that worked! In my own country, Denmark, women are still to a large degree not considered by boards. So it might seem that regulation is the only way to get the women talent pool through the glass ceiling and take advantage of the enlarged talent pool.

Generally, the male voice is more easily heard and paid attention to than the female's. As women, we have to speak up and forget the tabus of what speaking up entails for women. It is not wrong to ask for what we want, or to let our accomplishments be known. The way we go about them is key, adjusting the message according to the audience usually helps. But as I mention, it is important to speak up and have our voices heard.

I keep all my achievements and awards in a folder so that I can bring them up whenever I am up for review. It helps to show what you have been doing. I made a powerpoint of my achievements for a promotion interview and I got the promotion.

Women by nature are born and raised to wait for roles and responsibilities to be given. They are always up to the challenge but are not used to ask for it because they dont want and dont like rejection or asking. I highly encourage to ask for what they want and what they deserve, using facts and treating themselves as equal as men in the workplace because they deserve the same salary, the same position, and the same treatment.

Women generally have different reasons for negotiating. Lifestyle choices and perks are more important than purely salary or equity deals. Men look for maximum financial rewards and potential share options. Women often undervalue their total worth. Don't change your end goal. The total package is salary and conditions of contract. Be clear what you want, believe it and require to achieve excellence in the role and excellence in your life/professional experience. Go higher with confidence rather than timid and realistic. Women who aspire to be equal to men lack ambition!! Be bold and strategic in negotiating your deal. Go for it, you are worth it!

Para llegar a una buena negociación es crucial que estés conectada con tu ambición, y con ambición me refiero a proveerte la motivación y determinación necesaria para alcanzar tus metas y/o sueños. La ambición desde su luz es el reflejo de una autoestima sana y de una capacidad mayor de abstracción y visualización del futuro. Desde ese lugar también sugiero que investigues la oferta de valor y de mercado para que vayas preparada a esa posible conversación, es importante que tengas claro que valoras y cuáles son tus no negociables!! Recuerda que es posible ser creadora de tu propia historia al ser protagonista.

Más que negociar un ascenso, me enfocaría en mostrar cuál ha sido el camino recorrido que me ha permitido llegar donde estoy. Luego de eso, definir el plan de trabajo que acompañe el desarrollo de carrera y crecimiento. Finalmente, poder negociar ese ascenso que valide todo lo anterior. Hacerlo evidente.

Solo agregaría en este punto la importancia no solo de conocer a la organización; creo muy importante conocer hasta donde sea posible a ese interlocutor o interlocutores con quienes habrá entrevista. Ellos también son personas, con expectativas, aspiraciones y demás. Lograr entender esto puede hacer la diferencia en esta negociación pues puede facilitar esa conexión, que muchas veces determina una decisión a favor o en contra de nuestra candidata.

Believe that you deserve that promotion, and make others know it and get their feedback and advice. Never make assumptions, always refer to the facts., never use umms and errs in conversations, be very assertive in every scenario. Operate in a way that you are already in that new role you desire, i.e. if you want be in your manager or supervisor's role next, think about what they have to work with, and give them what they will need before they have to ask for it. Be strategic, and plan your future in 5-10-15 years' time, find out where do you see yourself and who do you want to be - and become that person today, right now.

A veces parece "trillada" la diferencia entre diversidad e inclusión, pero realmente "hay" diferencia y se puede evidenciar en cosas tan simples como cuando eres miembro de un consejo directivo mixto y cuando das tu opinión se pasa ligero, pero cuando esa misma idea la propone un hombre, es celebrada. Y no es un tema de falta de personalidad de la mujer, en muchos casos es luchar contra ideosincracias y paradigmas hasta en los niveles académicos más elevados. La solución es conjunta, no solo que la mujer haga notar su capacidad profesional y experiencia laboral, pasa por esa amplitud de criterio, aceptacion y revaloración del hombre profesional frente a la mujer profesional, ¿se puede? por supuesto que sí, apuesto por hombres inteligentes!
