When I transitioned out of the military, I decided to take a year off and work on my PMP certification. Once I passed my exam, I applied to jobs, and when I was asked during interviews about my 1 year gap, I told them I was decompressing from the military lifestyle and working on my PMP which I passed on my first try. The hiring managers were happy with that answer and I got an offer letter the next day. If it's a gap of a year or less, I don't think it is necessary to address it, but if you feel you have to address it, talk about any volunteer experience, or courses you took during that time.
