Additionally, there is a loss of proper integration between E2E tests, and the test cases do not provide a trend history and observability of automation test execution in the absence of a test management tool. Managing test cases is challenging, but there are strategies to overcome this. Test Management Tools and test case templates should already form the foundational base of our testing underpinned by the value of peer reviews – it is the basics. Building upon this, introduction of Test Design Optimization tools, can greatly enhance our effectiveness. TDO aids to optimize the scope during planningand design phase, enabling us to precisely target and streamline our testing efforts. Combining this with a Risk-Based Testing approach, we can align our resources more strategically, focusing on high-impact areas. This not only advances the execution but also elevates the overall quality. So streamline, focus, and deliver with quality.

Efficient test case management is vital for the success of QA efforts and, by extension, the overall quality of software products. By prioritizing test cases, leveraging technology through test management tools and automation, focusing on test case design, fostering a collaborative environment, adopting modular approaches, optimizing testing processes, allocating resources appropriately, setting realistic expectations, and investing in team development, organizations can significantly improve their QA team's ability to manage their workload. Each of these strategies contributes to creating a more efficient, effective, and motivated QA team, ultimately leading to higher-quality software and greater project success.

Test cases are a double edge sword that can swing between not enough steps or information to be usable and too much information so that they consume all the available time of the QA and then are no longer maintained. A team must find the right balance of writing just enough information so that way future users can gleam value from them but not so much that once they become stale they require too much time to update. Remember the test cases should be a guide to aid the team, not a guidebook that details every single detail. If they become too cumbersome and or time consuming they are doing the opposite of what test cases are meant to do.

I think there are no different templates for test cases. Ideally, there are good test cases and bad ones, all related to the main elements they should contain, such as the test ID, test case name, etc., along with the quality of the test case itself. But Steps can be written as either regular text, while some others prefer to write them in Gherkin syntax, especially if they are using the Cucumber framework (BDD approach) to facilitate automation integration.

The test case template should be designed in advance to meet the needs of your test lifecycle. For example, if you use the BDD approach in test automation, you might need to write your test cases using Gherkin for future automation. It's essential to have the test case template in place and well-documented so that everyone on the QA team follows the same pattern while implementing them. Test cases define what to test, how to test, when to test and what are acceptable quality levels at each stages. If test cases are not defined appropriately then test results become meaningless. Review of test results will impact to add most appropriate test cases or remove irrelevant test cases. Further more to add test cases where your processes are weak and giving inconsistent results.

QA team must be from the subject matter expert and have enough experience. It is very much lacking in the current industry. They must be as responsible as doer. We should develop database for gathering the outcome of test case. There must be rationale behind every test case.

Being in the function that I am and when working with the technical team to revamp or work on some module, this is basic checks that we can from our fraternity and experience ask them to do: 1)Define the test cases 2)Priortise them 3)Check and review positive and negative scenarios to identify potential defects. 4)let peers review and validate the same and brainstorm the same.

Maintaining and updating your test cases can help you cope with the changes in the software requirements, design, or functionality, avoid outdated or obsolete test cases, and ensure the validity and reliability of your test results.

Out of the box approaches like Outsourcing, specifically, crowdsourcing and/or the use of AI tools could provide help. Also, I do love the QA team that considers its Test Automation implementation as THE source of truth - leverage these resources. That said, one of the most effective approaches I've taken when tackling a test case backlog is - peer test casing. Simply put - block some regular time on a calendar, get together in space (physical or virtual) formulate a plan, assign areas of the product or roles and hack it out. Iterate till it's done. Not falling behind to begin with - include test casing in time budgets and execute just-in-time. Write Test Cases as bugs come in and, especially, when/whilst features go out.

Identify the root cause and address those issues effectively. Consider using checklists instead of test cases. Experiment with less detailed, unconventional test cases, combining general testing with exploratory approaches. While specs are supposed to be a source of truth, in reality, requirements are often outdated compared to test cases. But you can try. Invest in small agile product teams for long-term project involvement, reducing the need for extensive documentation, including test cases.

Some of the process quality improvements test cases may not be best solution where we need to go with traditional methods. Need to identify error based on the SOP and RCA to improve the process. Usually every process has multiple SOP which team members used to miss it and think they are correct in the work flow. In this scenario we can bring them for SOP review at periodical interval and make they well know about the updates. Error can be tracked and too 3-5 error can be reduced or arrested by focussed approach

Delete those test cases if the QA team does not see any value of them but is struggling. Maintaining test cases is part of the test design and it is never avoidable. Test management tools can be used to manage test cases, track test efforts, but not magically auto update test cases.
