National Vulnerability Database (NVD): A centralized database of well-known vulnerabilities impacting big-name systems and software.

In my experience, implementing the tools like firewalls, IDS,AV, encryption tools and secure authentication mechanisms are the controls one should have in place. Having SIEM would help to correlate the events and can provide detailed insight on the ongoing attack. Depending on the kind of attack, SOAR platform can be leveraged to automate and define the workflow to handle particular security incident.

A decent bit of preventative advice has already been given, so I would go with this: Perform forensics and try to determine, IN PARALLEL with other preventative activities, how the original breach was effected and whether they could have left a firmware or physical backdoor for persistance; was it am employee who (willingly or unwillingly) was compromised and if they plan on persisting, how do they plan on doing so? Same end point or something different? You have to cut the problem off at its root rather than trying to bandaid it in overlap.
