As a leader, one of your primary goals should be to practice effective, balanced and aligned communication. You need to say what you mean, and mean what you say. But you should also ensure that the messages you send through verbal (spoken and written) and nonverbal communication are consistent and in alignment with each other. Additionally, you should put just as much effort into listening as you do conveying the right messages. Everything from your tone and posture to the words you choose will influence the way your team communicates with you and each other. Foster an collaborative environment where ideas are welcome and valued your team will emulate that behavior. An excellent way of achieving this is through a practice called active listening. Simply put it is listening and letting the person know that they are being heard. In my opinion the most vital component of this practice is to listen without judging or jumping to conclusions. Communication will grind to a halt if it falls on dismissive ears.
