In cases of identified CVEs in a dependency, Snyk provides a few options to incorporate a fix quickly. For open source license compliance, Snyk offers configurable risk profiles as well as PR gates for blocking high-risk license usage in your code.

With Varcode, we have defined our pipeline configuration as code, store it in a version control system, and apply it to on our Azure DevOps projects. Varcode also helps us to manage our secrets, credentials, and environment variables securely, using encryption and access control.

CI/CD : Try to use your own resources/ runners for the pipeline to have complete control of your code and secrets. Use external vaults or AWS secret manager to store the sensitive information like access keys or API keys and more. 3. Try to add SAST, credentials / secrets scan, Source Composition Analysis in the CI/CD.

There seem to be nearly as many deployment tools today as there are opinions on deployment tools. I like to focus on fundamental principals first. CI-CD really does mean continuous integration and continuous deployment. How this is achieved can look many different ways. If you’re not continuously merging code to a mainline branch and producing artifacts, are you really “continuously integrating”? If you’re not deploying that new set of artifacts to a compute platform or library artifactory after every build, are you really “continuously deploying”? Choose a deployment tool that accurately, flexibly, and programmatically delivers your code to the target platform every time. GitHub Actions, Spinnaker, ArgoCD, CircleCI are my starting places

Monitoring has one major goal, to ensure we understand the health and behaviour of the application at runtime and optimise it to perform better. It can be very helpful to see bugs before it affects the customer's experience and leads to customer dissatisfaction. Monitoring of applications can be divided into two major categories; internal and external. Internal is focused on the application performance, resource consumption, bugs, logs, metrics. Tools like Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon X-Ray, Prometheus can be used. External is focused on the behaviour from the outside. General application performance, application availability. Amazon CloudWatch Synthetics, UptimeRobot, StatusCake can be helpful here

Prometheus is an open-source monitoring tool designed for reliability and scalability that collects time-series data through a pull model, scraping metrics from configured endpoints and also supports alerting based on predefined conditions, helping to detect and respond to issues promptly. Grafana is also a monitoring tool which provides a rich set of visualization options, allowing users to create dashboards for monitoring and analyzing data. We can also query data from different sources and create unified dashboards, making it a powerful tool for monitoring CI/CD pipelines.

The ongoing monitoring of applications in production and a robust incident response plan are also critical components of a comprehensive security strategy. The statement focuses on pre-deployment code analysis, but security doesn't stop after deployment !

Prometheus and Grafana tools that can help us to monitor Kubernetes clusters. Prometheus is a time-series database that collects metrics from various sources, such as Kubernetes nodes, pods, services, and containers. Grafana is a visualization platform that can display the metrics collected by Prometheus in dashboards and graphs. By using Prometheus and Grafana together, we are monitoring the performance, availability, and health of our Kubernetes clusters in real time.

While the tools are important in managing the CI/CD pipeline for Cloud Computing, it is often a layered approach of varying tools which is required. Of greater significance though, is often the people, the governance, the information, and the processes and operations. On a risk-based approach, the role of executive (and boards) in prioritising, governance, and in the budgeting and resourcing processes is significant, alongside the risk management. The need for assurance, with the application of some version a 3-line model (audit, shared services, and frontline), is increasingly part of any CI/CD management. The importance of the assurance function on a risk-based approach applies as AI operations become increasingly automated.

In addition to using static code analysis tools like SonarQube and Checkmarx, a project hosted in Azure can automate performance testing with Azure Load testing service. Projects that rely on using containers or VM images as part of their solution can automate malware scans within CI/CD pipelines with Microsoft Defender. Microsoft Defender scans can also run against Azure Files, Blob storage, or Data Lake storage. AWS GuardDuty has similar capabilities in scanning containers and VMs for AWS CI/CD pipelines.

Don't over-engineer or complicate the process. If you only need to deploy your infrastructure as code (Terraform, Cloud Formation, etc) in your GitHub Actions pipeline, you don't need to create a whole serverless pipeline. Start small and add as you discover the need.
