What do you do if your database query is taking too long to execute?

Firstly you need to add with (nolock ) to do not lock the transactions tables while quirinig and then you must create indexes for all tables

Checking the Execution plan and statistics gives us insightful information which helps us to identify any bottleneck.Adding Index strategy surely adds advantage to get optimum performance.

I assess the situation by checking if it's an isolated incident or a recurring issue. Then, I dive into the query itself, analyzing its complexity and ensuring it's optimized for performance. If needed, consider indexing certain columns or rewriting the query altogether. Additionally, I'd monitor the server resources to see if there's any bottleneck there. Sometimes, a simple server restart or optimization of server configurations can alleviate the issue.

First I will use explain and check which part of the query taking more time. Then I'll check whether I can improve the performance by adding indexes or changing indexes. But there can be situations, we can't improve the performance by changing or adding indexes. Then I'll try to rewrite the query in different ways without changing it's logic. And also I'll definitely enable the slow query log and check it.

Indexes are crucial for speeding up the query executions, but having too many indexes could result negatively. Indexes should be created optimally with the understanding of how much data we are dealing with, what is the capacity of the database and how many indexes in total we are hoing to have.

A través de la optimización de la estructura y la lógica de las consultas, podemos reducir el tiempo de ejecución y aumentar la eficiencia del sistema. Mi enfoque se centra en identificar áreas de mejora en las consultas existentes y aplicar técnicas de refactorización para optimizar su funcionamiento, asegurando una respuesta más rápida y eficaz a las demandas de los usuarios.

Dependiendo del motor, considere usar vistas, tablas auxiliares(algunos motores optimizan estos elementos). Analice que es lo que realmente se quiere porque muchas veces se traen más datos que se necesita, ya sea porque falta una tabla en el JOIN. Prefiera SELECT (1) FROM ... en vez de SELECT COUNT(*) FROM... Reodene las condiciones del WHERE, esto permite que se tome un indice correcto. Si lo anterior falle consulte el manual del motor. Existen formas de forzar los índices. Siguiendo las indicaciones de los colegas y mías no debería ser necesario, pero a veces no queda de otra.

Si es DBA, se debe constantemente actualizar las estadísticas de las tablas para que el motor tome buenas decisiones al momento de hace las queries. En especial si se ha hecho un insert / update / delete masivo. Hay bases de datos que solo marcan registros como eliminados pero no los eliminan instantáneamente. También es constantemente revisar si la base ha crecido de tamaño, si usa más memoria, si tiene más solicitudes. En estos casos será vital ajustar estos parámetros en la BD. Además es bueno revisar si los log están escribiendo mucho, pues esto retarda la respuesta del motor.

Adding extra servers or more powerful hardware may be necessary if your database is consistently experiencing high levels of traffic. Although there are simple scalability options available in cloud databases, additional power is occasionally necessary even in more conventional settings.

Si todo lo anterior no resulta es muy probable que al motor se le esté haciendo chico el hardware. En este caso es vital asesorarse con expertos, ver en que aspecto se está quedando corto el HW (Memoria, disco, red, etc). Si los recursos lo permiten, la nueve es buena opción, pues si se requiere escalar es sumamente fácil. En caso de que se considere esta opción sugiero hacer respaldos más seguidos de la base, porque un colapso puede ser inminente.

Check the joins used in the queries. Also check the joining fields are indexed. If still the problem exists, retreive the table table data to the temporary table and then join the tables, the results will execute faster.
