What are the advantages and challenges of using radar for forest biomass estimation?

Radar waves can penetrate varying depths into soil & water depending on factors like frequency, soil moisture, and water salinity. The penetration depth decreases with increasing frequency. As a rule of thumb, the longer the wavelength is, the deeper the radiation can penetrate the vegetation. In addition, Unlike optical sensors that rely on sunlight, radar systems emit their own electromagnetic waves (pulses) and analyze the reflected signals. This enables them to operate day & night. Hence, it is possible to study the trends and features of a forest throught the night time.

Radar is advantageous for forest biomass estimation due to its ability to operate in all weather conditions and its sensitivity to forest structure, which aids in capturing detailed biomass information. However, challenges include the complexity of interpreting radar data, which requires understanding its interactions with forest structure and moisture content. Additionally, accurate biomass estimation demands extensive calibration and validation with ground-truth data. Overcoming these challenges is essential for leveraging radar effectively in forest biomass assessments.

However, challenges include data complexity, signal saturation in dense forests, environmental influences, high costs, and the need for extensive calibration and validation. Combining radar with other data sources can help mitigate these challenges.

Radar's top advantage in monitoring large forests is its ability to penetrate clouds and atmospheric noise. Unlike optical sensors, which are ineffective during storms and cloudy weather, radar can operate regardless of weather conditions. Additionally, radar uses longer wavelengths, enabling it to capture unique features of forest biomass. The appearance of a tree varies with the radar wavelength: X-band wavelengths primarily reflect leaves and twigs, while L-band wavelengths (longer then X) are more sensitive to branches. By selecting the appropriate wavelength, you are able to conduct more accurate and detailed studies.

Compared to optical data which cannot penetrate dense canopy, Radar data, especially P-band has more advantage in this. Radar could map the height of the tree even in denser region. This tree height data could be further modelled for biomass estimation. Radar could also cover bigger area and cheaper which is an advantage compared to LiDAR data. However, LiDAR data could be used as training and testing data to predict biomass using Radar data.

The factors that challenges radars can be broadly categorized into: 1) Sensor parameters such as: spatial resolution, wavelength & frequency, polarisation mode (the orientation of the electric field in the radar wave), incidence angle (The angle at which the radar wave strikes the forest canopy) 2) Body/Surface parameters such as: topographic features, roughness, geomety and shape properties (for example the shape of the leafs), dielectric constant (aka moisture content). Notice that the optimal settings for these parameters depend heavily on the specific characteristics of the forest being studied. Forests in different geographical regions will have varying combinations of tree species, canopy structures, and environmental conditions.

Em um sistema de Radar, o retroespalhamento (backscattering) é o parâmetro que caracteriza o sinal de retorno após a interação do pulso enviado a uma superfície. Este parâmetro é influenciado pela geometria de visada, pela constante dielétrica, pela rugosidade da superfície, e do comprimento de onda utilizado. Dependendo do comprimento de onda (λ), o sinal de micro-ondas pode penetrar o dossel da vegetação em diferentes profundidades, sofrendo espalhamento desde os componentes do dossel, como os galhos e folhas, em comprimentos de onda menores, até os troncos e solo, em comprimentos de onda maiores.

Para estimativa da Biomassa acima do solo (AGB em Inglês), os métodos envolvem a relação indireta entre os parâmetros físicos extraídos das imagens SAR e a AGB obtida in situ, mediante análises de regressão. As estimativas de AGB com o uso de dados SAR depende de uma série de fatores, como: (1) comprimento de onda, ângulo de incidência e polarização; (2) variabilidade estrutural e espacial da vegetação; (3) o método de análise utilizado; (4) calibração e ortorretificação das imagens e; (5) propagação dos erros a partir dos dados de campo (alometria e amostragem).

In my experience, SAR has been successfully applied to the estimation of both forest biomass but also estimated volumes, though, as previously stated, this is saturated at the higher and lower ends of the range. In order for this application to be possible though, there was a requirement for sufficient and accurate ground based data (plot samples), multispectral integration (to help inform species mapping), and machine learning. When combined, derived outputs at regional scale were more accurate than stand based estimates from field samples, leading to significant inclusion of this data by forestry organisations. It is important to parameterise distinct forest regions as global application from a regional training dataset is not sufficient.
