How do you write UX content that is accessible and localized?

Use the words that are totally understandable by the users. If the words have some synonims, test them one by one then choose the one that is the most suitable to the users. The main thing is, don't try to be superior to our users, but be fit and suitable one for them.

To create accessible UX content with a local tone, focus on clear language, avoid jargon (no Aussie slang, for example), and incorporate considered and appropriate expressions. Consider the diverse audience and use inclusive language. Test your content with your local users to ensure it meets their expectations and needs. 🇦🇺

Apart from learning about your users, it's crucial to hire or have a local team to provide appropriate insights about it. Every country learns, reads, and considers things differently. What is a great and useful design for one place, might not be for others. My 3 tips to create accessible and localized content are: 🌎 Speak with locals: if you can't hire people abroad, interview and benchmark to see how other companies solve the same (or similar) challenges. Words vary a lot from place to place, especially in Spanish. 🎯 Test: use screen readers and test with someone who needs accessible content to empathize with what they perceive. ✋ Never take your assumptions for granted! Even emojis can mean something extremely different.

It's equally as important to understand the voice of the product (or company), and how you want to be perceived by your users. Then, and only then, can you balance that answer with what your users are expecting or requiring of you.

Para que a linguagem do seu texto se torne ainda mais simples, acessível e direta, evite estrangeirismos. Lembre-se de que muitas pessoas podem ter dificuldades cognitivas ou um grau de escolaridade baixo. Portanto, garanta que o seu texto seja compreensível e legível. Há várias ferramentas e calculadoras que podem ajudar você a medir a leiturabilidade de um texto. Use-as para tornar o conteúdo UX ainda mais acessível! Além disso, procure escrever botões Calls to Action de maneira explicativa, sempre especificando o que o botão vai fazer. Por exemplo, ao invés de escrever apenas “Assinar” em um botão, prefira a opção “Assinar newsletter”. Assim, você torna o conteúdo mais claro e menos ambíguo para pessoas que usam leitores de tela.

Além de criar um texto objetivo, claro e conciso, é importante saber se o seu conteúdo tem essas qualidades. Então, primeiro crie o seu conteúdo, tendo esses pontos em mente. Mas também teste ele para validar se, de fato, está sendo claro, está conciso, está consistente, se ele não gera dúvidas, se ele não gera ambiguidade, se ele não causa uma dúvida no usuário, se ele realmente está trazendo as palavras que o usuário costuma usar, se ele está acessível.

Learn about accessibility from a coding point of view. Once you learn how screen readers work, it opens up a whole new way of looking at design and content. Clickable links on tooltips? Screen readers don't announce them. Help text under a text field? Make sure it's set up so a screen reader reads that first and not after the user has finished entering their text. Or better yet, put it above the text field, then everyone will see it first. A lot of what constitutes accessibility, makes design and content better for all users. But it's not something writers generally learn. There are practically no writers talking about aria labels. So go learn what they are. Learn how they work. Accessible content does not start and end with alt text.

A localização, do ponto de vista de redação em UX, é uma parte fundamental para a acessibilidade. Isso porque é o entendimento de como pessoas usam determinada expressão que vai tornar algo acessível àquele público. Um conteúdo acessível leva em conta o visual, os elementos de cor e contraste,o tamanho de fonte, a descrição em áudio e a facilidade de modo geral de acessar um produto. Tudo isso também é conteúdo em UX. Portanto, a acessibilidade e localização são maneiras de atuar em UX, mas para tanto, entender as pessoas usuárias e testar possibilidades trarão mais informações das necesidades do público para tornar o conteúdo mais acessível e por fim, consumível.

Testing certain phrases (e.g., financial, legal, technology-related) is critical, especially if the user is a niche. Fortunately, in my situation, a research team assisted me in selecting the appropriate copies. Prepare a few explorations and join the usability testing to observe and determine their comprehension and response.  Never make assumptions when you are unsure.

I work with a localization team and they all agree: simpler is better. We love our puns and our jokes in content, but that may only appeal to one region you're targeting. For many, this might feel restrictive, but it's a chance to flex your creative muscles and find a happy medium for your global audience.

Localization is key when launching a new product or expanding to another market. Localization includes wording, ways of reading, images, and design features. For template texts, it's way better to use local names (and take into account that some cultures use from 1 up to 4 surnames or most people have +2 names!) Those are localization key points. If you can't travel or hire local people, here are some key tips: ✨ Try reading local stuff: visit local websites and check even minor things such as how they ask for addresses or how they put pricing options. Yes, they vary a lot! 🖼️ When thinking about pictures or sample images, use local actors. People don't feel appealed to pictures that look different from their daily lives.

Did you know that in Mexico there are 4 different timezones? This means that whenever you send (or schedule) an e-mail for "midday", some people will receive it early morning and others between 10 and 12. Creating accessible and localized content means considering these things ⚡️ It's not the same for you to receive an e-mail during your sleeping hours (5 am) or to receive a notification of debt at late night. Thinking about our users' routines and how we imagine they'll feel when they use or receive any communication from other products, will help us create better pieces of text that perform way better 🚀.
