Nothing like having direct access to the hardware level with nothing abstracting anything. This is useful in getting 100% of the performance possible for a small function that is a bottle neck using higher level code. Or to directly access hardware level features the higher level language does not support. But you lose a lot of flexibility higher level languages give and it takes a lot of time to write even a small assembly code function and troubleshoot all the errors. It is also much harder to find good support people with skill at maintaining assembly code for that CPU. The best mix is to write your program in a high level language and just write assembler for bottle necks and to directly access hardware features.

I haven't looked into rust in detail yet, but it appears to have features similar to C, like direct access to hardware, but has language features that C lacks, like failing to compile programs with memory access violations, or data race conditions. The language still needs to mature more to speed up compilation and improve the resulting programs. So for now I would stick with C, but keep an eye on Rust for future projects.
