How do you use algorithmic paradigms and techniques in your work?

In the intricate world of routing and navigation, Dijkstra's algorithm is widely recognized for finding the shortest path between two points, albeit requiring significant tuning for large-scale applications. Parameterized algorithms, it’s basically a way to look at hard problems(the NP problems) at a more granular level.Hard problems are a part of compilers, say register allocation problem which boils down to graph colouring problem Parameterized algorithm tries to separate out complexity of those problems into polynomial part and exponential part, polynomial part is in terms of input size and exponential part is in term of some parameter(hardware) we are good about polynomial part, if u can prove that hardware parameter is fixed for specific target then hard problem can be solved deterministically, become tractable, known as fixed parameter tractable problems. Has huge practical implications for problems which considers hardware parameters.

Divide and conquer is a typical pattern in GPUs that power most AI actions today. With GPUs, a problem is broken down into smaller sub-tasks, solved concurrently using individual threads on a GPU. Results are then merged to solve the original issue. This maximizes the GPU's parallel computing capabilities, improving performance and efficiency. Computing languages like CUDA and OpenCL help to achieve this.

I was developing an address book manager in C++. When a new request comes to modify, append, delete some entry in some user's address book, we first need to find if this contact already exists or it is a new entry. Some address books can have up to 60,000 contacts in it. Comparing each contact was also complex as we need to parse the JSON and fetch all the contact numbers stored in that. So, searching each contact in address book was taking O(n^2) time complexity. The code was written using C++98 tool chain. I decided to use a unordered_map (hash table) to make the searching in O(1), but C++98 didn't have support for it. Finally we had to migrate the C++ tool chain to C++11 and use unordered_map to bring down the time complexity.

Choosing the right technique depends on various factors Problem Size: For smaller problems, more direct algorithms like brute force may be enough Problem Structure: Check if the problem can be broken down into sub-tasks or if the best choice can be made at each step (Greedy Algos) Performance: If performance is the key, use efficient techniques like divide-and-conquer, dynamic programming, or heuristics Precision: If approximates are okay, heuristic or monte-carlo techniques can be chosen Resources: With enough memory and power, parallel algorithms and execution can speed up the process Often, a combination of the above techniques will be required to solve a problem more effectively

If the problem at hand could be mapped to standard models (algorithm paradigm), it makes communication across all stakeholders' i.e., be it developers, architects, project managers, customers very easy, and brings everyone on the same page quickly. Consider if any known paradigm fits the problem. Consider tradeoffs of choosing one over the other. 3. Consider scalability, maintainability, ease of development. There are 2 levels of details to understand here - the broader view (macro) and the finer details (micro) At a macro level, you must understand the problem, decide the best algorithmic paradigm to apply and recognize your resource constraints. For instance, GPUs can only process limited amount of data at a time. At a micro level, you need to understand the nuances of the chosen programming language. You should deeply know how the chosen programming language implements the data structures you intend to employ with the above paradigm. Once you are done implementing, test it thoroughly through diverse test scenarios, prioritizing edge cases. Analyze the performance and refine it for optimal efficiency

There are many standard libraries that encapsulate a lot of state-of-the-art knowledge about algorithms in the form of collection libraries. Dictionaries, hashsets, sets, lists, stacks, and queues form the backbone for the implementation of many modern algorithms. When using functional languages with structural comparison, connecting such containers with custom, complex data structures is even easier. As a result, we can easily take advantage of this massive mountain of knowledge to build applications which are better optimised. Uniqueness constraints, repeated searching, deltas, and even machine learning are easier to implement efficiently when one knows the space and time complexity of such structures.

While the core algorithm remains, data access methods can impact the performance. Cache behaviour exemplifies this. Consider a 2D array A in C++: for (int i = 0; i < num_row; i++) for (int j = 0; j < num_col; j++) // accessing A[i][j] Switching the loop order influences performance due to C++'s row-major layout. Accessing `A[i][j]` fetches `A[i][j + 1]` and potentially other elements based on cache line length, enhancing subsequent iterations. Thus, row-first looping optimizes cache use.

Now that we have a good understanding of what an algorithm is, we can explore other problem-solving methods like heuristic methods. These methods are used to solve complex problems that do not always lead to an optimal solution. However, they are powerful tools that complement algorithms. They help to solve problems that are difficult to solve due to their complexity, which requires too much computer power and time to find an optimal solution. Heuristics methods use "shortcut" rules to simplify the problem and randomise hyperparameters to explore the solution space. Some examples of heuristic methods include Particle Swarm, Ant Colony, Quantum Inspired Evolutionary Algorithm, Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm, and more.

One excellent example of divide and conquer algorithms is the FFT algorithm. Optimization is achieved by ignoring trivial calculations which reduces the number of mathematical calculations from N*N to NlogN. Other techniques such as DWT give added advantage of better peak resolution while exploiting divide and conquer benefits

Understand the problem and the data. How good is good enough? How bad is too bad? The former can provide a stopping point, the latter can trim the search space. How accurate is the data? If your data is only ten percent accurate, looking for a one percent accurate solution might not be worth it. How big is your problem? With small amounts of data, simple brute force algorithms will be fast enough and debugging not too awful. With large amounts of data, start looking at algorithms (e.g. FFT mentioned elsewhere) with some math behind them. You might still need the brute force algorithm to test the fancy one. Debugging can be interesting.
