How do you keep your motion design characters consistent and coherent across different scenes and platforms?

A character can represent your brand, serving as a brand identity. Once viewers become familiar with the character, they can easily recognize the brand or company. However, the first step is to research the kind of audience you are targeting. Different age groups have different tastes. Representing a character is akin to having a brand ambassador, similar to how Red Bull has its own cartoon character that represents the brand.

If using characters across a brand's identity, a style guide is key. This will allow you to keep the characters consistent when reusing them. Keep in mind all potential uses of the character. Will they be in 3d animation, 2d, billboards? What about in print; might you be making standees or toys/models of the character? Be clear with your style guide upfront, and you will be able adapt your characters to different formats later.

Modular approach is a must when doing it motion design, we call it puppet animation- in this type of animation you first create the rig and that rig has all the capabilities like expressions, mouth movements, bone movements, so what we do is use that rigged character and do the animation. Another approach was doing frame by frame animation where one has to redraw every frame and the character was drawn frame by frame as well. that is a time consuming process but it has a different feel to it, so it all depends on what type of animation feel do you want to go with, this is mainly talking about 2d animation, for 3d animation a rigged character is a must.

Modular is key - creating the character in parts (atomic design). You may need multiple rigs, especially if your character is heavily stylised in their movement. It also makes making changes to the original character much easier.

I adopt a modular approach designing characters with interchangeable parts that can be adjusted or swapped without losing their core identity. For example, a character that looks great on your Mac screen might not work well on your laptop, or a character that animates smoothly on a web browser might not load fast enough on a social media app.
