How do you discuss your back-end framework experience in an interview?

On top of knowing, you should understand the flow of the framework as well as how to manipulate it to get the results you need. Some frameworks can be confusing sometimes so patience and practice is needed.

One should know it's frameworks enough to get the work done. Knowing a framework to a complete extent can be a plus point. But one should keep on reading about the framework he/she works on as it will allow him/her to get the knowledge of the unheard libraries & functionalities. Often, it opens up easier way of doing the tasks as compared to the one already being following. So, keep the work going & study as well to do the work more smartly.

I prioritize fundamental concepts before back-end frameworks. While knowing specifics is valuable, strength lies in enduring principles that transcend technologies. Frameworks come and go, but fundamentals endure as the bedrock for all technologies. Some companies prioritize specific frameworks; showcasing proficiency is crucial. This demands direct experience and a commitment to learning on platforms like LinkedIn and YouTube. Highlighting influencers and resources showcases technical skills and a proactive approach. In conclusion, mastering fundamentals ensures adaptability and a solid foundation for continuous learning in the tech landscape.

Before going to the framework, I believe it is interesting for you to have a very solid foundation of everything behind the problem, if you are going to work with the web, for example, have knowledge of protocols, how a request works, data structure, and then follow for the framework. Following this idea, you will find it very easy to use different ones and understand the difference between them.

First, be sure to understand the fundamentals of the programming language the framework you're using, is based on. Understand how it operates under the hood and what is the problem it solves. Sometimes the language you uses give supports to solve a specific problem but make it in a very complex way. Once you understand how the language works, look at your framework and understand how it solves the same problem, but in a more efficient way. Some frameworks make use of a more updated version of an old implementation to do the same thing. Understanding why the framework implementation is better will make you stand out from your competition. Try to showcase some implementations also helps.

Practically speaking, I wouldn't expect a full time developer to be maintaining a portfolio. But what I would expect is for these skills to be demonstrable through a well structured technical test.

Additionally, when presenting your projects, emphasize the impact of your contributions on the overall project success. Detail how your use of the back-end framework optimized performance, improved scalability, or enhanced security measures within the application. Also, illustrate any innovative approaches or unique features implemented using the framework.

Being a Back-end Developer working for open industry have an advantage that your portfolio is always growing & ready to be demonstrated. I don't think one have to get that much extra time to make portfolio.

As a backend engineer, you need to showcase your experience in the field. Bring a few projects you are proud of. It can be either open-source contributions or commercial projects. Describe well the purpose of the project, the challenges, and the solution. You don't need to deep into technical details: interviewers are also checking if you can communicate clearly with potential stakeholders.

While a developer may not be able to show his projects or even maintain a portfolio as they may be under an NDA what you can do is use your project experience to highlight a problem you faced and how you tackled it while highlighting your approach and strengths . It is also a good idea to rehearse at these approaches before hand if u are asked to show some projects but can show them due to constraints. You should also be very specific and specify the exact problem and solution and not give vague details

Clearly comment and document your code to elucidate your problem-solving approach and reasoning. Additionally, showcase your proficiency in writing unit tests and conducting thorough debugging, underscoring your commitment to producing reliable, maintainable, and error-free code.

For assessments like these are just to see how one solves the problem as the method demonstrates a lot. So, I suggest to clearly understand the problem, do a dry run & go for the simplest solution possible.

The best approach I've seen recently is to ask the candidate to solve the problem that they will be tackling daily at work. For the backend position, it can be asked to write code for the database transaction, convert data formats, and organize code in classes/functions. This gives a good understanding of how the developer structures the work that is similar to the open position. It doesn't make sense to ask about difficult coding challenges when the job position doesn't require that.

I like these questions I think they're a good conversational way of understanding a candidates experience and their interests. For me a few buzz words that are maybe missing, I'd be interested if they know about OWASP, Functional Vs OOP, API design patterns/anti patterns

Additionally, it's crucial to showcase your problem-solving skills by illustrating real-world scenarios where you've implemented these concepts within the back-end framework. Emphasize your ability to optimize and troubleshoot, showing a comprehensive understanding of how these frameworks function within dynamic environments. This not only exhibits your theoretical knowledge but also highlights your practical application and adaptability within back-end development scenarios.

One of the best parts, as I enjoy these questions being asked. These allow me to share my real world experience & relate with one of my projects rather than finding a book's example.

I assume feedback as the most valuable thing for a Developer as it allows one to analyze his/her way of working from another's perspective & make it better in any way.

Remember, consistent learning and adaptability are key to staying at the forefront of the ever-evolving landscape of back-end development.

I have found STAR model helpful no matter where you sit in an interview. And then allowing for probing questions to explore on that. It is a great tool to gain confidence and the 'imposter syndrome' with well conducted interview is gone or minimised. Encouragement from interviewer is necessary

Many developers are suffering from "imposter syndrome". They think their work is meaningless and therefore they can't explain what they did. But at the interview, you need to show your confidence. As a preparation, examine all your completed projects. Ask your former teammates and managers to provide feedback. That will be a solid base for you to demonstrate confidence.

Depending on the length of the interview and if it is technical or with hiring manager(s), I would add a 'where I want to be' and make sure it aligns with whatever is in the job description which attracted you to change jobs in the first place.
