How do you design your page object model to support cross-browser and cross-platform testing?

BasePage class holds all the common page objects of the web application. This helps in reducing the duplicate code and allow reusability and benefits the most at the time of maintenance. The BasePage class is extended by all the other Page Object classes giving them the leverage to reuse the common page objects efficiently.

To design a Page Object Model (POM) that supports cross-browser and cross-platform testing, abstract browser-specific and platform-specific details. Use WebDriver interfaces to handle browser actions, ensuring compatibility across browsers. Implement environment configurations (e.g., using properties or config files) to manage different browsers and platforms. Utilize selectors that work consistently across browsers, avoiding browser-dependent strategies. Centralize platform-agnostic methods for navigation and interactions in the POM. Integrate cloud-based platforms like Selenium Grid to facilitate testing on multiple environments.

In my experience, we didn't make the driver part of "page object" or base page. Page was independent of the browser type. The base test class had the driver type which was responsible to open the webpage using that specific driver.

Firstly create a Factory Class that manages browser and platform configurations. You can store your browser and platform settings in an external configuration file. Set up Selenium Grid to run tests in parallel across multiple browsers and platforms. Use cloud-based testing platforms like BrowserStack or Sauce Labs which offer a wide range of browser and platform combinations for cross-browser testing. Page elements might render differently on various browsers or platforms, especially on mobile devices. To handle these variations use dynamic locators that can handle differences in element identification. Incorporate logic in your page object methods to adjust based on the browser or platform.

Build a JSON-like POM with a base class as a common methods holder (click(), wait), using isMobile to fine-tune by platform. Use flexible XPath/CSS locators and a driver factory for cross-browser support (Chrome, Firefox, Safari). Store settings (timeouts, URLs) in config.json. Override base methods only for very special cases (Safari/IE). Run tests in parallel (TestNG/JUnit) for optimization. Ensures maintainable, scalable testing.

This flexibility ensures that testing is both thorough and adaptable to different testing environments.

To support cross-browser and cross-platform testing in the Page Object Model (POM), using an interface or an abstract class is a key design strategy. By defining common methods and behaviors through an interface or abstract class, the implementation details for specific browsers or platforms can be encapsulated in separate classes. This promotes code reusability and maintainability, as modifications are confined to the browser or platform-specific classes without affecting the overall structure. Additionally, it facilitates easy extension for new browsers or platforms by creating new implementations of the interface or abstract class.

Using a config file, I've stored test data in a .properties file, device specifics in a .json format, and translations for both English and Arabic. Within the Page Object Model (POM), I've dynamically managed locators based on language via this config file. This integration enhances the POM's robustness, ensuring that each page object remains clean, focused, and language-agnostic. The strategy promotes modularity, flexibility, and swift adjustments, without amending the core test code. This not only facilitates multilingual testing but also ensures adaptability across diverse devices.

Using a configuration file along with a tool that handles environments, for example, Spring Boot for Java, allows you to provide all the settings even when pointing to another environment. This allows us to support even local development environments as a first-class use case. This helps your teams write more flexible automation and encourages all to use the tests even when developing, ie Test Driven Development.

Just to make tests decoupled from the html changes, interesting elements can be given "test-id" sort of attribute too. It is similar to "id" but it is reserved to be used by UI tests so that if someone changes id, html structure, the tests don't get impacted

If possible, work with developers to ensure elements have stable identifiers. Alternatively, leverage more resilient locator strategies, like relative XPath or CSS selectors that target element attributes less likely to be modified.

When we talk about page object model, I would actually use flow object modal. I would use continues flow for each object. If I need elements from a particular page I’d grab them from flow objects. I would still name them as loginPage or based on the main screen.
