1 Compression types

There are two main types of data compression: lossless and lossy. 2 Compression methods

Symmetric protocols use the same compression and decompression algorithms on both ends of the communication channel, ensuring compatibility and consistency. Asymmetric protocols use different compression and decompression algorithms, which may offer more flexibility and efficiency, but also require more coordination and negotiation. Some examples of compression protocols are ZIP, JPEG, MP3, and MPEG.

4 Compression applications

Data compression applications can be either general or specialized. General applications are those that apply to any type of data, such as archiving, backup, encryption, and transmission. Specialized applications are those that target specific types of data, such as text, image, audio, video, or multimedia. Ethical challenges are those that relate to the impact and implications of data compression on society, such as privacy, quality, authenticity, and accessibility. Some examples of ethical challenges are data breaches, copyright infringement, fake news, and digital divide.
