How do you compare different types of load balancers for microservices?

Load balancers can be viewed from two perspectives: application developers and network administrators. Developers often see load balancers as API gateways, focusing on load balancing algorithms, fault tolerance, failover, authentication and authorization, session or client affinity, SSL offloading, and more. Conversely, network administrators view load balancers as physical devices or virtual software that ensure high availability of applications. For applications relying on Layer 7 features like sessions, headers, and cookies, application-based load balancers are essential. For optimal results, I recommend using a combination of both perspectives to meet all requirements.

Load balancers are like traffic cops for websites and apps. They help distribute incoming requests to multiple servers, ensuring that no single server gets overwhelmed. There are two main types: Network-Based Load Balancers work at a basic level. They look at IP addresses and ports to decide where to send the request. It's fast and straightforward but doesn't understand what's inside the request. Application-Based Load Balancers are like traffic cops who can read road signs and direct cars based on where they need to go. They work at a more detailed level, looking at things like website addresses (URLs), cookies, and more. This gives them more control and flexibility to send requests to the right place, but they're a bit slower.

Observability: The load balancer should provide metrics and logs that can be used to monitor its performance and troubleshoot any problems.

I prefer using the NGINX Ingress approach and Kubernetes' load distribution, where you can even set up autoscaling based on parameters for each service. Currently, we have services available like KEKA (Kubernetes Event-driven Autoscaling), which trigger scalability strategies based on events.

When dealing with load balancers, it's essential to consider a few more things: Backup and Redundancy: Just like having a spare tire in your car, load balancers should have backups. If one fails, another takes over to avoid disruptions. Load Distribution: Think about how evenly the load balancer spreads traffic. You want it to be fair, like sharing a pizza with friends. Configuration: Setting up and adjusting load balancers might need some technical expertise. Ensure it's set up correctly to avoid problems. Compatibility: Make sure it works well with your existing systems, like the type of servers or applications you use. Cost: Consider the price and whether it fits your budget while delivering the performance and features you need.

To compare the two microservices load balancers, L4 load balancers work at the transport layer, give very good performance, and provide negligible latency. On the other hand, L7 load balancers work in the application layer, giving more features such as routing on URLs or headers. Most of these solutions work over cloud, managed by AWS or Google Cloud, which scales out automatically but is costlier compared to their manually scaled self-managed alternatives. L7 load balancers are better used for higher complexity because of more advanced features, such as SSL termination and sticky sessions, but they introduce a small increase in latency compared to the L4 variety.
