One of the common problems that sounds so obvious and simple but gets ignored is having data being loaded into the index that's not required for ranking results (yes this does happen frequently!). It may be quicker on rendering an experience since it comes back in the same call but it's often expensive storage and quickly bloats and soaks up capacity. Be sure to keep the index purely for what's needed for ranking and separate out anything else into its own optimized storage. E.g. don't store image filenames in the ranking index if they're not used for ranking and instead use them in their own media service.
