How can you use smoke and sanity testing to ensure your software is ready for release?

Smoke testing is like a quick check to make sure your software works okay. It's the first step before doing more detailed testing. Think of it like a guard at a party entrance: it lets in the well-behaved guests and spots any big problems right away. This helps save time and makes sure we use our resources wisely. Whether we use fancy computer tools or regular people to do this check depends on the project. In the end, smoke testing is a smart choice that helps us work better and make sure our software is strong before we test it more.

If the smoke test passes, it indicates that the basic functionality is intact, and further testing can proceed. If the smoke test fails, it means there are critical issues that need to be addressed before any additional testing is carried out. If the sanity test passes, it confirms that the recent changes have not introduced critical issues, and the software can proceed to further testing. If the sanity test fails, it indicates that there may be issues related to the recent changes, and these need to be addressed before moving forward.

While Performing Smoke testing we can check the Positive flow of Application is working fine also we can perform smoke testing for Build verification also by doing smoke testing we can check whether build is testable or not. on the other hand Sanity is Subset of Regression Testing in which we will check the Application by using positive as well as Negative inputs

Smoke testing we performed to ensure that the acute functionalities of the program/application is working fine. Smoke testing is performed when the build comes for the first time to QA. Sanity testing we performed to check the bugs have been fixed after the build. It generally performs when the build comes for the next time. In general form we can say Smoke testing is also called a subset of acceptance testing, and Sanity testing is also called a subset of regression testing.

Imagine sanity testing as a software safety net. It makes sure our software stays working well as it grows and changes. For instance, if we have an app for booking flights and we recently updated how seat selection works, sanity testing would focus on just that part to ensure passengers can still choose seats without any issues. Instead of testing everything, we just look at the parts that got changed. This helps us catch problems early and saves time.

Smoke testing: we could focus on existing functionalities whether to ensure that is there any functionality got broken by adding/implementing new ones. Sanity Testing: Mostly we could focus on l/w environments fixed defects got verified and also we could do some basic functionality testing.

Sanity testing can usually be used to find edge cases in a new functional area or check edge cases around an existing functional area if any changes have been made within that area of software.

It focuses on a specific set of functionalities, modules, or areas of the application. 2. It is relatively quick to execute, as it doesn't involve a comprehensive set of test cases. 3. Unlike formal test cases, sanity tests are often ad-hoc, informal checks. 4. The goal is to ensure that the recent changes have not broken critical functionalities. 5. It does not aim to cover all possible scenarios or functionalities. Instead, it targets specific areas of concern.

Sanity Testing is a subset of Regression Testing which is performed to ensure that the code changes that are made are working properly. The purpose of Sanity Testing is to determine that the changes in functionality and bug fixes are working as expected. It is also called as “Tester Acceptance Testing”. When the defect/bug is fixed and when tester receives software build with minor changes in code.

I think smoke and sanity test cases should be the first in the list to be automated and executed in every environment post-release to quickly check and verify the release. It can save a lot of time and give quick results. It should be the part of CI/CD pipeline.

For smoke test, the best environment to execute them are probably on branch level deployment as well as production environment. Whilst some might be against using production environment as a source to test against, it might be useful to check whether critical flows have not regressed in main production environment immediately after a release.

It's making sure the important things aren't affected.

Well, in my opinion, for both cases one should be consistent with the planning when you're assigned with both test you should have your personal record for the test cases assigned so that testers can compare the ideas with the previous ones that was already tested. So you can get a better idea and it won't waste time especially for manual testers.

Whenever the Dev team provides a fresh build to the QA team. Fresh Build=Build has new changes made by the developer.When a new module/functionality is added.

Some ideas for implementing effective smoke testing are 1. Choose atomic checks that target to test the stability of the system 2. Automate the checks and integrate them on a CI pipeline 3. Configure the checks to run parallel to ensure that they run faster 4. Continuously monitor these jobs for total execution time and when this value exceeds a threshold it is time to revisit the smoke scope 5. Include checks on the infrastructure stability as well as a prerequisite to the overall smoke jobs.

I think it's very important to speak to stakeholders in order to understand the critical flows that the application uses on a regular basis and move on to recording them in a test case management. If you're using automation frameworks to define a subset of tests, you can use test tagging functionality to execute the smoke tests in the given or respective environment

Smoke testing when automated and configured to a CI tool can be an effective mechanism to provide quick feedback to all stakeholders on the health of the application and the environment itself. Ideally these tests should be designed to be lightweight so as to ensure instant feedback on the stability of the application being tested.

In my testing process, I incorporate both smoke testing and sanity testing to guarantee the software's readiness for further evaluation. Smoke testing is my go-to right after a new build or version is prepared. It provides an initial check for stability before delving into deeper testing. Sanity testing, however, comes into play after specific modifications are made to ensure they haven't introduced any critical issues.

After each build, we perform smoke testing, including BVT (Build Verification Test), to ensure that the build is suitable for in-depth testing by the QA team. This practice has proven to be highly effective, particularly in scenarios where we receive multiple builds within a single day, as it serves as our criteria for accepting a build

Smoke and sanity check are really a good form of testing to give the green light to stakeholders such as engineers, product or management that the system is stable in its critical flows and is good to move onto the next iteration.

Smoke and sanity testing together is a very good tool to make sure that the build is ready for release, to take a decision on the risk if the build is released.
