However, it provides only the good practice, not the best practice. A project manager must know how and when to use the proper processes, and hence the ability to identify and determine the processes and the project life cycle is crucial for a project manager when dealing with crisis.

Because PMBOK provides such guidance, using it would help the project managers to make an accurate decision on what to do when dealing with crisis. For example, risk management can play a very strategic role in times of crisis. PMBOK guides us that we need to identify assumptions that need to be validated, to identify risks that need to be responded (avoid/mitigate/transfer/accept/escalate), and to deal with issues that need to be resolved. On top of that, PMBOK guides us that we need to engage key stakeholders because their power/interest/influence can help us in dealing with problems or crises due their ability in controlling things that outside our control as project managers.

The main challenge in times of crisis is that PMBOK is more into documentation while most of the times when we are having crisis, the speed is more important. As a result, we need to make proper justification whether document/governance is more important than speed or vice versa. In most cases, crisis forces us to prioritize speed over governance.

While the PMBOK claims to be about "how," it is really light in that department. Otherwise, why would Earned Value Management take only 9 pages in the PMBOK Guide but require a 300 page text book to get all the details. In times of crisis, the PMBOK can point you in the right direction, but you will need to look for the details elsewhere.

In times of crisis, rigid adherence to PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) may hinder adaptability. Instead, prioritize flexibility and rapid response over strict adherence to processes. Focus on critical tasks, streamline communication, and empower teams to make swift decisions. Generally, it depends on the nature of the project crisis. If it's related to churning out poor quality jobs, then a strict recourse to the PMBOK might be very useful. However, if the crisis borders on schedule overrun (time slippage) then some creativity around implementation like re-allocating project resources to steer the project back on course may be needed. In the latter case, applying the spirit of the PMBOK rather than its letter in resolving time slippage would be more appropriate.

Experience is the best teacher. The tenets of PMBOK are great, but they must be handy during crisis management, otherwise no value will be derived from those principles. You don't want to start opening books during crisis, you definitely want to deploy solution immediately. The main challenges here are it impacts the quality of our decision if those principles are not well tested, we frustrate our key stakeholders which could detrimental to delivery success and it could keep us in box as we refuse to innovate. As professionals we must test those concept regularly to stay on top of our games.
