How can you tell when it's time to replace your power supply unit?

The two most obvious signs are no response when you click the on button, and spontaneous rebooting, especially during power-intensive applications like games and bright screen HD streaming. If your computer is running the same programs as always, but recently has been sluggish and randomly shutting down, it may be a PSU issue. Other signs include a burning smell, not hearing your fans turn on, weak LED lights, or your HDD and fans spinning at different times instead of simultaneously during startup.

There is not a set schedule. Did you update any internal parts? Is it booting up and then dies at different times? Are you planning on adding an upgraded graphics card? May need to upgrade your power supply to new voltage requirements. When you turn it on, the power supply fan makes clicking or loud sounds?

There are other DC voltages as well: Blue: -12v White: -5v Purple: +5vSB (standby) Yet, after checking all voltages if given back correctly, still might have bad PSU. Another option is to check the PC with a good known PSU to check the PC under loads.

When buying A New PSU always take notice of the Wattage Rating and either match the older one or perhaps better to get one with a higher rating. Also make certain the PSU you select fits in the chassis of the computer and that the connectors match your motherboard.

Always check the specs for the computer you are replacing the power supply in. One thing I will not do is skimp on the cost of my power supply.

replacing a PSU as a beginner is actually fun. I started replacing PSU's when I first started fixing Computers. The way i did it was to disconnect the power from the PSU removing the mounting screw of the old PSU and gently rest it on the bottom of the computer. i would take the new PSU and place it next to the old one. I would disconnect one cable of the old PSU from the computer and follow that by connecting the corresponding cable from the new PSU. One at a time switch the cables . First disconnect the old and then connect the new. It was much harder to get it wrong this way. Sometimes the main power cable would be made of two separate connectors. Usually one small and one large to be put side by side to make a large connector.

Replacing a PSU can be an enjoyable activity but when you have replaced as many as I have you may want to have what I have, a box with both 24 and 20 pins and 4 and 6 pins to test PSUs by simply plugging the connectors in and then looking at the lights, I created this test box as an activity.

A miniature vacuum and air nozzle can quickly clean the internals of the PSU. This keeps it from overheating and performing as designed. Over time as the computer gets moved around, the connections can unseat which may cause inadvertent power issues. It's just good practice to check all the cables following the cleaning.
