How can you monitor vision data using ROS?

ROS allows different parts of a robot, like sensors, motors, and cameras, to communicate with each other efficiently. It also supports tasks like navigation, perception, and manipulation, making it the most popular framework for developing and testing robots.

On thing i have found helpful with vision data is typically accessed through topics using the sensor_msgs/Image and sensor_msgs/PointCloud2 message types. The sensor_msgs/Image message is used for 2D data like camera images and depth maps, containing information like header, encoding, height, width, and data array. The sensor_msgs/PointCloud2 message handles 3D point clouds from sensors like lidars and stereo cameras, including details like header, height, width, fields, and data array. This setup allows effective handling and processing of vision data in various robotics applications.

In the case of sensor_msgs/Image, it may be of importance to keep track of the encoding type. Some images may have rgb8 while others make use of bgr8. Knowing the key difference between the various encoding types will help a lot in Image Processing

One of the best advantages of using RViz to view vision data is that it allows to project the vision data over other sensor data. The capability to superimpose the vision data over other data such as Pointcloud help in sensor fusion and can eventually help in developing integrated nodes

One thing to consider while recording vision data through rosbag is that it may take up insanely large amount of storage space. One could consider recording the compressed format as opposed to the raw data if the duration of recording is high. If the compressed format is not available by default, the ros package 'image_transport' can be used to generate the compressed format of the raw image data

First, record the data by running "rosbag record" with the relevant vision topics, such as "/camera/image_raw". This captures the data into a .bag file. To replay the data, use "rosbag play" followed by the filename of the recorded bag.
