Get the Learners Committed and State clearly their benefits. Clearly State how this learning objectives will proffer solution to the learner’s pain points (this will buy their interest) Then, fully involve them in the learning process, get them committed by making the learning process participatory which will gear ⚙️ into solving a problem. (Pain points) E.g By the end of this,You will apply this project management framework in order to execute an immediate project. There could be a short/playlet where this principles are applied and a small-scale project will be executed by the end of the playlet. This will make it more practical & participatory. Lastly: Set up an Action/WORK PLAN that will kick of immediately the training is over.

SMART is fundamental. Contextualized (participant context) your objective statement is next. You can't drive participants to achieve 100% Program's goal during the session, but you can accommodate their needs that will help them achieved the goals after the session!

Learning objectives have to to be aligned with the business objectives discussed with the sponser of the program. Depends of the depth which the client expects from you. Hence learning objectives can range from awareness to application level.

I would add details about what will be communicated, who the customer is, and which sales and satisfaction ratings will increase? What about: “During this course, you will practice applying principles of the XYZ communication framework to realistic scenarios. By the end of day 1, you will be able to apply the Welcoming Principles to an onboarding call with a retail customer, with the aim of increasing your confidence and increasing your company’s NPS score. By the end of day 2, you will be able to apply the Reassurance Principles to a troubleshooting call…”

At the start of the session I like to ask participants to reflect on how the topic will benefit them in their job role. Give them 30 seconds to reflect and share how, in practical terms, this session will help them perform better. Let them convince themselves to pay attention.

Open the lesson with a fun introduction and no matter how simple the LO’s are,the students will be engaged N-Need Tell them why they NEED to be able to do X/Y/Z from this lesson T-Title What’s the lesson called R-Range and Revision How will the lesson run, Q&A/Note taking and revision from previous lesson O-Objectives By the end of this lesson you will be able to:….. The INTRO sets the lesson up thus making the LO’s fun and meaningful 😉

Getting to know as much about your learners before the training session will help you create more WIIFM moments. A short and simple survey sent to learners ahead of time will help you extract these insights and deliver personalised WIIFM moments in both the training material and presentation.

This would be even better if you defined the specific type of project management method. What is its name, and what are the specific principles that will be applied during this course? Also: plan and execute should be two seperate objectives! Lumping them together will make evaluation ineffective.

Asking the learners to share their expectations, and goals at the beginning of the training session is a really clever approach. Make sure you write the learners' expectations and goals as a checklist and keep it visible throughout the training session. Then at the end, go through the checklist with the learners to ask if you've met their expectations and goals, ticking each one off as you go along.

Review and revise is not only important from the learner perspective, but also from the training perspective. If a learner didn’t achieve their goals by following the training they will not sponsor it, they are likely not to engage again, and at times the training provider does not get feedback as people drop off and try alternatives methods. This is why short but ongoing self assessments are crucial, and adding short feedback opportunities where the learners can add “what could have been explained better; or what didn’t work; or what do you need more training on” can help both sides of the learning experience. At the same time small recognition each time they did achieve what was expected will encourage them to continue their training.

Many of my learners admit they typically overlook learning objectives, however, in the last few years I have made it my mission to provide them with a quick explanation on the importance and purpose of learning objectives. Once they understand how learning objectives are leveraged during training, they can provide better feedback on the effectiveness of the training and the quality of the lesson objective.

Always consider how you will measure, evaluate and be able to differentiate between an excellent/average/poor learner response. When you use open and broad terms like "the learner will *understand* how to *communicate effectively*", you need to consider what it looks like for them to show you what understanding means. This example is very hard to measure as it's not clear the depth and breadth of what you're measuring. If you consider Blooms taxonomy, a person could list the features of effective communication and another could identify, explain, apply to a relevant situation and create examples of what it looks like. According to the "understand effective communication" learning outcome they've both met the criteria.

Make sure your learning objectives tie directly to relevant performance objectives. For example, if the learning objective is: "You will learn how to communicate effectively with customers, which will help you increase your sales and satisfaction ratings". The performance objective could be: Use the company's communication process when speaking with all customers Then, the related results metric could be customer sales and satisfaction ratings, measured with the percent increase or decrease.

With a Problem Based Learning approach - an experience: Our primary goal was to arm students with hands-on problem-solving skills for navigating international business challenges. In the International Business course, a PBL scenario depicted an American company’s expansion to India and Brazil, urging students to dissect and strategize over cultural and operational intricacies. Continuously referencing this problem-solving objective, they collaborated, researched, and formed strategies, with feedback ensuring alignment with our goal. This methodology ensured practical, applied knowledge, readying them for real-world situations.

Here is a checklist that you can use to check your learning objectives: 1. Does it support the overall objectives the program intends to offer to the learners? 2. Is it measurable, identifiable and observable? 3. Can you create an activity to let the learners experience it in the classroom? 4. How will you gather evidence that the learners have learned? 5. Who will gather the evidence? 6. Will that evidence give you sufficient proof to make an informed decision on which of the learners are ready to move forward and which of them need more support to succeed? 7. How does it align overall with the Return on Investment expected by the organization. 8. Can it be quantified and measured in terms of values to demonstrate Return on Investment?

Use engaging activities for reinforcement for discussions. Balance attainability with challenge. Instill a growth Mindset. Share inspiring success stories.
