How can you efficiently manage testing resources?

I've had senior executives look at me strangely when I specifically ask "What are we trying to achieve?" so that we know what we should be testing. All good testing is rooted in SMART objectives and clear hypotheses. Without them, you might as well just stick a finger up in the air to see how the wind is blowing.

There's a technical name for testing without a hypothesis: guessing. Without a clear hypothesis, without I believe X will achieve Y you don't have a test... you have a box ticking exercise on your hands. Know what you want to set out to achieve and confirm or disprove that hypothesis SMARTYly. Employ the SMART criteria, ensuring your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. I firmly believe that marketing is the combination of art and science, where creativity is fueled by data. Without a hypothesis and robust KPIs in place, the data will be useless and the science won't be there to fuel your creativity.

Sprinting is a minimum viable method to test out ideas quickly. The book, "Sprint", written by Jake Knapp, John Zeratsky, and Braden Kowitz, outlines a five-day process for solving critical business problems and testing new ideas: Day 1: Define the problem and assemble a cross-functional team. Day 2: Generate a variety of ideas through brainstorming exercises. Day 3: Select the most promising ideas through group discussion and decision-making. Day 4: Create a simplified, realistic prototype of the selected idea. Day 5: Gather feedback by testing the prototype with real users. The entire process is designed to be completed in five days, promoting efficiency and creativity in problem-solving and idea validation.

Consider implementing testing at various stages of your development process. It's common for teams to invest significant resources into projects before beginning any tests. By then, substantial time and money have been committed, with the launch impending. Insights gained at this stage may be sidelined for the elusive "next iteration," which might not materialize. To optimize outcomes, integrate testing earlier in development, ensuring that valuable lessons guide immediate improvements rather than being deferred indefinitely.

Mais do que testar A/B ou multivariado, é importante pesquisar mercado, entender o público e só depois entrar em possibilidades de teste. Normalmente quando você já atingiu uma maturidade de dados sobre seu desafio, o teste será muito mais certeiro, mesmo quando se tratando de performance digital, campanhas de Ads, etc... Partindo do princípio (que infelizmente nem sempre é real) que seu time vai entregar tudo dentro das melhores práticas de pesquisa e usabilidade, que o projeto é comum ou pouco específico e que há tempo (e verba) para se testar, quase todos os métodos serão eficientes. Particularmente gosto de trabalhar com testes de UX, CX, A/B e Multivariado, isolado de público e estatísticos.

Acho que o principal da implementação é ser inteligível para todos da cadeia de produção. Muitas vezes o que vai ser implementado está muito preso na cabeça de quem desenvolveu o projeto. Quando bem definidos os KPIs e os métodos, a implementação em sua maior parte será simples, independente da ferramenta. Claro que dentro dos padrões de segmentação, comparação e também com eficiência de software e usabilidade. Ter dados confiáveis é o principal ponto nos nossos projetos, por isso implementar testes, redundâncias e métodos de avaliação da própria implementação é essencial para funcionar. Claro que o planejamento precisa de escopo, roadmap, estrutura, mas partimos do princípio que esse é o básico da entrega e precisa ser bem feito.
