How can you conduct a thorough self-assessment of your skills?

Transferable skills are a special topic for me since I leveraged them to cross from IT to business and then to product management. Any skill I developed in one role that I can leverage in another is transferrable. I like to itemize hard and soft skills from previous jobs. The skills common in 2 or more past jobs are transferrable. You can then compare that list against a Target Job Title to see which past experiences you may be able to leverage in your resume and interview.

take a time and reflect on this...it s hard to have a clear idea about which skills are really transferable but all of us have more ones than we assume. I am thinking about coordinating the staff shifts, design a training course, leading a team to a specific target..most of these skills are delevoped in different job contexts but they are transferable from a sector to another one

Technical, or "hard skills", are not always demonstrated by earning credentials. Many develop on-the-job technical skills regardless of a degree or certification. A couple of ways to identify hard skills would be to list out everything you did at a previous job and the tools you used to accomplish those tasks. You can also search LinkedIn for that same job title, review current jobs out there, and see the hard skills they require. That can often refresh your memory.

many techinical skills are based on the specific needs coming from that job but at the same time you can achieve a new level of ability by studying and training .

Gap analysis is a great tool to identify your "skill gaps". A simple method is to list all responsibilities and skills from your past 3 jobs (excel is great for this). The same skills developed across 2 or more jobs are your transferrable skills. You can then add your Target Job Title and its job requirements. The skills common across your past job(s) and Target Job are the transferrable skills you can leverage! Any skills from the Target Job Title not in your job history are likely skill gaps. This is a great approach if you like to see side by side comparisons.

maybe it could be smart to ask for a check by someone else during this step, HR specialists but also friends or collegues. However it is essential to find a tool usefull to do this analysis by yourself

When actively working I'm open with my manager on the areas I'd like to develop. I also volunteer or "raise my hand" for additional projects if I recognize it'll allow me to develop particular skills. LinkedIn, Facebook groups, podcasts, and articles are great resources for insight and learning on a topic. It is good to identify the level of development you're looking to achieve for a skill. Especially if preparing for an interview, learning enough to speak on a topic will suffice. In other instances, online "exercises" gives you hands on experience. Volunteering for a non-profit can provide hands-on business or technical experience in a business setting, so is a great option to develop skills that are not available in your current setting.
