How can you compare a security consultant to a security analyst?

The role of most consultants is much more variable than a standard "Security Analyst" because it is based on the client's needs. One day you might be performing compliance and the next executing a penetration test. Consultants typically only work on client engagements briefly so the role can change more frequently. Finally, a Security Consultant could have an engagement filling the role of a Security Analyst.

Security Consultants and analysts if domain they are operating is considered same have different level of expertise. Consultants have broader and well rounded exposure and experience across multiple verticals, domains to be in a advisory position with a client. Whereas an Analyst is more focused on operational expertise on a specific specialized area .

Information security consultant is subject matter expert who can help to design and define secure architecture for product or system whereas analyst can review and monitor effectiveness of the design and advice on gaps and solutions to remediate issues! Both profiles helps to secure the systems and products !

While consultants advise on best practices and strategy, analysts provide a more hands-on, day-to-day approach to maintaining security.

Security Consultants are expected to have a deeper and broader understanding of the environment, understand business requirements and challenges, and understand technical requirements and challenges in implementation and operations. Security consultants cannot be limited to a few technical areas and tools only. Whereas, a security analyst role would be less technical and more of business requirements, coordination and business and technical performance and security operations planning and reporting

Although titles do not necessarily indicate the exact role performed, a security analyst will have a more defined and static role than a security consultant. A Security Analyst is a typical role that you will find in an organization but depending on the size of the team, this role could be wearing multiple hats. Common tasks include incident response, monitoring network traffic and audit logs, and using tools to do your job effectively.

The thing about a "Security Analyst" is that, this kind of roles are a good representation of "jack of all trades, master of none". This can be a virtue, but it depends on how much this analyst can understand the several cybersecurity domains and apply those to the organization.

I see similarities between the roles of an Architect / Designer & Security Consultant / Security Analyst. While a Security consultant would have to be well versed and make decisions on the Organizations security posture, a Security Analyst is expected to be more well versed with Application Security / Vulnerabilities and ways to remediate them. Needless to say both play very important roles in the Security Posture of an organization.

As a full time IT Security Analyst, I can tell you the skills you will need will greatly depend on the needs of your employer. If you are the only one that does cyber full time at your organization, then be prepared to do everything from GRC, to incident response, and to threat hunting. If you have others on the security team, then your role will be more narrow. I would say focus on being a very well rounded cybersecurity professional. Focus on your technical skills like configuring security tools like EDR and SIEM, and doing some malware analysis. But also improve your managerial skills. This will be very important in a GRC role and incident response situations. If you can show you’re well rounded, that will greatly benefit your career.

A Security Analyst will be 1) checks the networks, systems, and applications of an organization for potential security vulnerabilities. 2) To find and address security incidents, data analysis, and pattern recognition are used. creates and carries out security policies and practices. 3) may work on particular security initiatives, including putting in place a new security answer or addressing a security breach.

For security consultants, the most important skill in my opinion is technical acumen. You don’t need to be an expert in every security tool, but you need to be able to understand the technology quickly and translate security risks into business risks. Without this ability, it will be an uphill battle when trying to get the business to mitigate security risks.

Generally speaking, consultants need to have a wider base of skills because the needs of engagements will vary. One day you could be working on compliance and the next you might perform a penetration test. Some consultants can secure enough business to focus on a specific area (i.e., compliance) but that is not always the case. Additionally, more qualifications (i.e., certifications, degrees, etc.) make selling your services as a consultant easier. As a Security Analyst, you only have to convince one customer (i.e., the hiring manager) that you can do the job so the needs are more specific and not as broad (typically). Security Analysts also only have to think of things in relation to their organization.

Security Consultant: Focuses on proactive security measures, risk assessment, and strategy development. They are often brought in for specific projects or assessments. Security Analyst: Focuses on day-to-day security operations, including incident detection and response. They work to protect the organization's assets from ongoing threats.

The technical skills for Security Consultants should be broad but not to deep, while the Security Analyst should be (in best case) specialized and deep. The same goes with qualifications, e.g. Consultants are good with a CISMP, Analysts need more concrete tech qualifications like specific Splunk or malware reverse engineering trainings. Then on the personal skills side a Security Consultant should be a trained people person, able to convince even senior management and state difficult situations in a clear and precise manner. The analyst does not need to have these personal skills in my opinion as they should concentrate on their technical work and presentation to their respective supervisor.

The skills required to play an information security role include understanding the technical aspects of the environment and converting that understanding, along with your knowledge of regulatory compliance standards, into a comprehensive assessment of business risks.

One path aligned with security consulting is auditing. As regulators keep pushing for stricter cybersecurity and privacy laws, the laws will most likely require independent audits to validate that the laws are being followed. This means that auditors will be in high demand, especially auditors with technical acumen.

As a Security Consultant one of the nicest things is that you always get to focus on a specific security engagement whereas a Security Analyst, you will have to deal with different aspects of an organization, which might not be as favorable. Additionally, consultants can work on different security aspects constantly because engagements do not usually last too long. On the flip side, as a Security Analyst, you will be in a more stable role where you do not have to attract new business or try to beat out competition by constantly showing results. Security Consultants also tend to travel more frequently, which could be a pro or con.

Typically interacts with various stakeholders, including executives, IT teams, and third-party vendors, to provide expert guidance and recommendations. Collaborates closely with IT staff, incident response teams, and occasionally law enforcement when dealing with security incidents.

Comprehending the distinctions between these seemingly similar roles is of paramount importance, particularly for those of us who are newcomers transitioning into the field of cybersecurity. Personally, I am inclined towards positioning myself strategically for a role as a security consultant. This preference stems from a desire to avoid the routine and repetitive tasks that are often associated with security analyst role.

Both roles offer very good career prospects and of course also their own challenges. An analyst will probably develop more into the technical lead role or develop themselves into a (technical) managerial role. The biggest challenge for an analyst might be the internal career evolution as there are often limitations around that. The consultant is of course more broader in this aspect and often times will not only develop themselves into more senior consultant roles but also be hired by companies for an internal position due to their experiences. The biggest challenge here is not the technical structure and setup but the adjustment into corporate and internal policital structures.

Security consultants tend to be more strategy oriented and think about the big picture when it comes to managing an organization’s security program. As a consultant, you probably won’t specialize in one area, but you will need to understand all aspects of security in order to make effective decisions for organizations you are helping. If you enjoy the strategic aspect of security, then a security consultant is most likely the right decision.

As a security analyst, most times, your role is usually constrained to a specific domain within cybersecurity. This brings with it a level of consistency/predictability to what you do each day. As a consultant however, you offer security services to clients, so you are at the mercy of whatever the client needs per time. You should have cross-domain expertise to enable you take on these challenges. My general advice to my mentees starting out in cyber usually is this, "As you progress through your career, don't be scared to venture out, don't be scared to try new things, and don't be scared you'll make the wrong decision. Eventually, you'll find a domain (or domains) which will be your happy place".

One of the important factors to consider is travel: as a consultant, you’re usually away from home a lot. As an analyst, there’s usually little to no travel. Every individual needs to consider their circumstances and preferences. One important aspect to consider is your family. I see many who go into consulting for money or acclaim, but these things don’t end up bringing as much joy as anticipated. For example, I’ve a friend who’s close to retirement and made millions as a consultant. He advised me to avoid jobs that involved regularly traveling because he missed so much of his kids’ lives when they were young. Even though he was involved with them then and now, it’s something he regrets missing out on.

My career started with a network vendor and then to many years in an MSSP. The experience of working in operations has been a key to my role as a consultant.

A security consultant usually has more experience in depth and width of all domains in security, such that he is able to present a well-rounded informed view of a situation that is to be assessed or reviewed. Apart from technical skills, a consultant must also have a variety of soft skills to work with, collaborate, communicate and arrive at rational actions items. A security analyst may typically be confined to work within a specific domain (like IAM, CSIRT, etc) and primary works on analyzing data, detecting trends and calling out areas of improvement or where immediate action is needed. Both consultant and analyst in this case need to work together closely on common security objectives and can play a pivotal role in org success.

If you are starting your career journey into cybersecurity, don’t worry about making the wrong decision. Any experience you gain will help you learn, which is what matters most early on. Don’t try to look for the perfect fit role for you; you won’t find it. You need experience to learn about what roles you like and dislike. There is nothing wrong with accepting a role and figuring out the role is not for you.

Choosing the correct role for you comes down to your preferences. If you like a variety of work, meeting new people, and traveling, perhaps the consultant lifestyle is best. If you prefer a more consistent job environment where you can predict your workday, then maybe a Security Analyst is right for you. There is also nothing that says you cannot try out both and see which one you enjoy more.

Both roles are essential, with consultants providing expertise to enhance security frameworks and analysts ensuring day-to-day security resilience.
