How can educators integrate social innovation into their curriculum and pedagogy?

However, social innovation does not have to be focused area of education only limited to students who are motivated by social impact. Social innovation education should be democratized into every aspect of education. In a world where more and more individuals, businesses and corporations care about social impact and are being expected to help with social innovation, it is important to weave social innovation education into every aspect of current education.

I highly recommend that anyone interested in education start by reading Paulo Freire and his ideas on Critical Pedagogy. In his book "The Pedagogy of the Oppressed," Freire emphasizes the importance of education being liberating. He believes that students should be seen as agents of change rather than empty vessels waiting to be filled by educators, which he refers to as the process of Banking Education. According to Freire, it is essential to not only read words but also to understand and engage with the world around us.

Social innovation education is crucial because it prepares students to become proactive change-makers. It equips them with the skills to tackle complex social challenges, promotes civic engagement, and fosters a sense of responsibility toward their communities and the world.

In my experience, integrating social innovation into the curriculum can be done by creating interdisciplinary projects that address real social challenges. For example, when developing a social entrepreneurship course, we can include practical activities that encourage students to identify social problems and create innovative solutions.

It is not very complicated to weave in social innovation into curriculum. It can be done by adding critical social innovation concepts into current curriculum. For ex., building inclusive products doesn't have to be a separate topic. It has to be required topic for any student learning about product innovation. In addition, by using social innovation case studies, students can learn about potential impact of their work in ways they might not have imagined earlier

Partner with local social enterprises and NGOs to give students real-world experience. This can involve internships, service-learning projects, or guest lectures from social innovators.

From my experience, people learn best when they experience things firsthand. So instead of just talking about exclusion and marginalization, show them visual & real-life examples (eg. any examples from the books Invisible Women or Mismatch will do), invite guest speakers, or even have them think about situations where they have experienced a product/service not working for someone - whether this was themselves, a friend or even a stranger. Then have people design a simple solution, like a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), and have them test it. Their first solution likely won't be groundbreaking, but it will also give them realistic insights into why working on social innovation is not an easy, yet worthwhile endeavor.

We need the everybody to do their bit towards social innovation to achieve our Sustainable Development Goals. It can't be the responsibility of a few people who are already passionate about social impact. Hence, social innovation becoming part of all mainstream education is important and urgent so that everybody can do their bit towards social impact whether it is inventing a new vaccination to end a disease, creating a business that creates employment for millions of people or simply minimizing harm from their own products.

Como tema central de la gamificación utilizo los Objetivos del Desarrollo Sostenible, buscando que, entre otros, sean capaces de conocer qué papel tienen en la sociedad actual. Espero que posteriormente, una vez que ellos estén en sus centros educativos, sean capaces también de trasmitir esta importancia a sus alumnos.

Social innovation often requires stepping outside of one's usual circles and talking to a diverse group of people. It requires listening to and empathizing with others, who might have completely different backgrounds, lifestyles, worldviews, or access to opportunities. Hence, if we integrate social innovation into traditional education, we raise future leaders who better understand and value diversity and nuance, and might even question the status quo to create a more equitable environment.
