Here's how you can navigate networking as an introvert.

I'm very much an introvert which surprises people because I'm a professional speaker & trainer. But I don't think that introversion makes it out of the realm of what one does for a career. My typical ice breaker question is, "What brought you to this event?" I usually approach people standing alone with this because I know what it's like to be solo at an event and it's nice to be noticed and engaged into a conversation.

As an introverted entrepreneur, navigating networking events can feel daunting, but there are strategies to make it more manageable. Firstly, focus on quality over quantity by identifying a few key individuals or organizations that align with your startup's goals. Prioritize smaller, more intimate gatherings where you can engage in meaningful conversations. Additionally, leverage digital platforms and social media to initiate connections and foster relationships in a more comfortable setting. Remember to listen actively, ask thoughtful questions, and share your passion for your startup authentically.

Preparation can be your secret weapon, especially for introverts navigating networking events.📝🔍 Research attendees and speakers beforehand to pinpoint potential connections and conversation topics. For example, if you know someone who is interested in sustainability, you can discuss recent developments in the field. 🌱 Create a list of questions to break the ice and steer discussions. Practice your self-introduction, highlighting your expertise and passion. For instance, if you're a graphic designer, share how you love transforming ideas into visual stories. 🎨 This preparation not only reduces anxiety but also ensures your interactions are purposeful and engaging.

Networking can often seem daunting, especially for introverts who might find social engagements exhausting rather than exhilarating. Here's a list of questions that can help! What inspired you to join today's event? 1. I noticed you work in [industry]; what's the biggest challenge you've seen in the field recently? 2. Have you worked on any projects recently that you found particularly exciting? 3. How did you start your career in [their field]? 4. What's one piece of advice you wish someone had given you early in your career? 5. Are there any trends in our industry that you're particularly interested in right now? 6. Is there anyone else here you think I should meet?

One of the least noticed quality of introvert nature is "Observations". To have a quality network one needs to identify the right person for connections, however the process of identification involves keen observing capability, hence networking is not limited to speaking about your self or handing visiting cards, it is more about understanding the buzz and then gaining knowledge on that buzz. Gaining knowledge builds confidence which further improves the approach for communication. In my opinion the realistic goal is to connect with people who strive and are well known for their knowledge.

When I first started out in the BD world, the best initial advice given to me was "Attending". When I "showed up" to that first meeting, I was amazed at how friendly and inviting everyone was. Some introductions were made, conversations were simple but memorable, and I only needed to speak about information I knew about myself and my company. From that first event, I began to understand how to better prepare for the next round, create attainable goals, and it became easier and even more enjoyable every time.

In my experience, i have seen people who are a little evolved know that it’s a good idea to seek professional help in case they are an introvert. The professional gives them the confidence that it’s perfectly normal to be an introvert. It’s important for them to start networking with smaller groups which are aligned with their goals of networking. It could be a business networking club to a rotary club. Secondly, the chances are very high that they will find someone similar in a smaller group too and hence they should aim to identify those people. Similarity could be profession or city from where they belong. Thirdly, it’s a good idea to be with people who can bring them on a common platform with others to build a conversation

Persistence. Consistency. Just keep showing up. Building a network, seeing results from that network takes time, effort and patience. But if you embrace it then it can also be a lot of fun and you can meet some amazing people who even become friends. I’ve been networking 22+ years and it is actually part of my role that I now thoroughly enjoy. I didn’t always. As a young lawyer and an extroverted introvert I would force myself to go to networking events. I knew it was part of my job and watching all the partners I also knew I had to embrace it. I’d feel down hearted when I didn’t come away from an event with a new client or instruction. It took me 5+ years of weekly networking for that to happen. Just keep going - it will click for you.

Exactly. Take the pressure off everyone else by coming prepared to ask questions. Sometimes topics as simple as: 1) why are you here? 2) what company are you with? 3) what did you get out of the talk or hope to get out of this event? It is amazing how easily you can strike up a conversation with others who are feeling just as awkward as you are. And from that opening you can continue to build a bridge.

As a social introvert myself, I think gaining confidence in myself over the years has helped a ton in networking situations. I also truly believe in being Genuinely Curious and present in the moment. If you dig deep enough into conversations, you can always find some type of common ground with most people to keep the conversation going and enjoyable

Introverts tend to be very empathetic. Use this as a reason to stay connected (i.e. via Social Media like LinkedIn). To do this, ask about the challenges/problems they face, and once they share, be empathetic and ask if you can connect because you might be able to help them. People love being helped. Note do not try and help right there, as it is not the right time or place. When networking you want to spend 5-10 minutes with a quality contact. So you can get around to more people.

I’ve discovered having a good memory for names, faces and dates comes in super handy. Find a way to remember some of these details as it makes you memorable leading to ‘know, like, trust’. Others are amazed you remember something about them…esp their name!

Social media, especially LinkedIn, is an excellent tool for introverts to follow up and engage after networking events. Here are some strategies: Connect Promptly: Send personalized LinkedIn invites reminding them of your conversation. Engage Regularly: Like, comment on, or share their posts to stay on their radar. This shows ongoing interest without the pressure of direct communication. Private Messaging: Use LinkedIn messages for more personalized follow-ups, suggesting a meeting or sharing opportunities that could benefit them.

Using good apps to generate content that is interesting can generate traffic. It is always easier to enlist services of your IT department based on your social media policy

As an introvert, social media is a great place to network. Luckily your personality will prevent you from wanting to push your wares, as this is the wrong tactic. Take advantage of "lurking and learning", aka social listening, to find stuff out about your ideal focus, as much as you can to prime yourself before you start talking to them. Conversation from a keyboard is great for an introvert, as you will have time to think carefully what is the correct thing to say. The focus should be on them, not you. Ask questions on a subject which resonates with them, to get them to respond. Your conversation should be about getting them to know, like and trust you, as then they will be more likely to remember you the next time you meet up again.

I agree that social media is a great way to connect, engage and learn before a face to face event. Afterall, LinkedIn is really a virtual networking universe so why not start there? It is also a perfect way to follow up.

Make sure your focus and time are always spent with people who have more knowledge and who has gone through more failures than you. Why ? Experience matters, look for people who have taken decisions out of the box or who are good at story telling ( a skill crucial for networking). You can switch between groups based on technical and non technical competency related to your field. Similarly, you niche can be based on hobbies, common sports, investing, stocks etc.

If you're new to networking you will inevitably attend events that you will walk out of and think "well that's 2 hours I'll never get back .....". Over time, you will get a feel for the right type of event, find your tribe and that niche that you're looking for. Don't rush it but commit to it and fail fast but learn faster.

Finding niche events or groups where like-minded individuals gather can make networking more enjoyable and effective. Start by using social media platforms like LinkedIn to search for industry-specific groups and events. Join relevant forums and follow hashtags that resonate with your interests. Utilize event platforms like Meetup or Eventbrite, filtering for keywords related to your niche. Check out local community boards and university event calendars which often host specialized gatherings. Finally, ask peers for recommendations on specialized conferences or workshops, ensuring you choose environments that align with your professional interests and personality.

To start with, in an event try to identify people whom you can converse in your mother tongue. This will reduce a lot of apprehensions and fear from your mind. Once you get your mojo and master the rules, then start expanding your reach. Be natural, dress well and stay positive with a smile.

This is the gold! Whether you meet people at a big event or a small dinner party, the follow up is where real networking begins and it’s a beautiful place for introverts. Follow up is where you take a one off meeting and actually BUILD the relationship. Follow up can be checking in, commenting on a post, sending an update, saying happy birthday, just genuinely showing care. And it doesn’t have to be done in a group or in person! It just needs to be done.

I like to make follow-up a game. Will I be the first one to follow-up? Another good move to show you’re interested in furthering the conversation with them.

I would say right follow-up is the most crucial & critical thing while you are networking with people. Follow-up helps the communication to float & create a healthy relationships with people. As an introvert, initially you can use some indirect methods / ways of communication like social media platforms, messaging, gestureful words, etc.

I like to follow up via email and LinkedIn. Typically I’ll write something interesting about our conversation or the individual in general that I’m looking to work with on back of the business card, so that my follow up is more impactful.

Knowing when to make contact is important. Choosing the most convenient time to contact may make or break your relationship. Understanding the organisational culture of a prospective partner increases predictability.

The word "networking" tends to instill fear in most people... what if we just called it "having a conversation"? If we all approached any opportunity to connect with another human being with curiosity and humility, we would create the "network" we need, and more! Just be nice, speak up, ask a few questions about the other person, and they should return the favor... AND THAT'S IT! #futureofwork #networking

One interesting thing I did once was I wrote on my name tag "I'm Introverted, please say hi to me". As an introvert, I prefer others initiate conversation with me and that name tag trick got exactly the desired result.

Many people consider networking as a vehicle to promote themselves or their business, products or services. This should not be at the fore of their intentions. Networking is about assessing who is in the room, who has a pain or gap you can fill, and then you helping them for free to let them realise you know what you're talking about. If your advice makes a difference, especially if it is tangible or immediately usable, they will remember you for your expertise. Even if they don't need you right now, they may know someone who does, or be more likely to remember you in the future. And getting them to know, like and trust you first is a great help towards remembering you as the expert to contact when the time comes.
